Pretty soon the weather is going to be unbearably hot and you're going to be looking for activities to stay cool. You might think you need to go inside, but we have a better idea - going underground to the deepest cave in Oklahoma. It's not only very cool in the cave, but it's full of adventure you'll never forget.
Alabaster Caverns State Park in Freedom, Oklahoma, is home to the largest natural gypsum cave in the world open to the public.
The caves are part of the 200-acre state park that offers daily guided tours of the caves.
The caves are tucked away in the hills and rugged terrain of northwestern Oklahoma. You'll access the caves down a walkway and stairs. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, as the tour involves a strenuous walk.
Once inside, you'll quickly notice the cool temperatures. The caves hover between 55 to 60 degrees during the hottest months, so it's the perfect summer activity to keep you cool.
Not only will you see a rare form of gypsum, but you’ll also get to see several species of bats during your tour.
Guided tours are offered every hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for only $10/adult, $7/child and $8/seniors. A maximum of 40 visitors are allowed on each tour.
The tour takes about 45 minutes and guides you along a path about 3/4 mile long.
You'll descend over 300 feet below the surface of the earth. And walk over 300 stairs. But the adventure will be so worth it.
Plus, you'll get to see rare alabaster you can't see anywhere else in the world, all while staying cool underground.
After visiting the cave, you can spend the day exploring the state park. It's full of adventurous places waiting to be discovered.
