Nestled in the heart of it all, Ohio is your quintessential Midwest state, full of scenic splendor, unexpected attractions, and some of the most charming small towns in the country. Ohio really is the sum of all its parts; the quaint and beguiling small towns and "little big cities" that form the patchwork of the beautiful Buckeye State. Across Ohio, there are so many charming small towns worth visiting, from historic river towns in the state's southeast region like Marietta to picture-perfect locales nestled on the shores of northern Ohio's Lake Erie.
And it's not just our waterfront towns that merit your attention, either; Germantown is a gem of a place just outside of our state capital, while Yellow Springs is a funky little iconoclast that's downright delightful. Today, though, we're turning our attention to a place in southwest Ohio that's sure to capture your heart: the lovely little town of Lebanon. Teeming with historic points of interest, charming antique shops, family-run restaurants, and an abundance of old and new attractions, Lebanon is a place that's peak small-town vibes and the perfect place for a weekend getaway in Ohio.

Is Lebanon worth visiting?
Downtown Lebanon is classic Americana at its finest: well-maintained old buildings, century-old houses, diners, and lots of downtown charm.
Home to approximately 20,000 people, this small city preserves much of its Old World roots and culture.
The Shakers were one of the city's earliest influencers and traces of their heritage can still be found in the city. By 1802, the city was surveyed and mapped out, though the Lebanon of today still looks very much like the Lebanon of yesteryear. Strolling the town's quaint streets and finding treasures in its antique stores will transport you back to a simpler time, which, if you ask us, is something we could all use a bit more of in our lives!
How To Get To Lebanon
Located right along Ohio's Interstate 71, Lebanon is an easy trip from Midwest cities like Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and even Louisville and Lexington. Yet despite its central location, Lebanon remains a bit of a hidden gem to those outside Southwest Ohio, making it a weekend getaway destination that will feel like your very own delightful discovery.
Getting Around Lebanon
Like many small towns in Ohio, Lebanon is an incredibly walkable locale, with sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and many restaurants, shops, and attractions in and around the historic downtown district.
While the majority of our adventures in Lebanon, Ohio, are all within walking distance of the downtown, there are a few excursions located just outside town that require a car.
However, as you can see from the Google Map, both of these outliers are conveniently located off major highways and no more than a 20-minute drive from Lebanon.
Best Time To Visit Lebanon
With four distinct seasons (something for which Southwest Ohio prides itself!), Lebanon really is a natural beauty all year. But there's something extra special about visiting Lebanon during the holiday season, in which the town dazzles with twinkling lists, red-and-green wreaths, and loads of festivals ... and festive fun! In fact, if you're looking for your very own Hallmark holiday movie experience, visit during the annual Lebanon Horse Drawn Carriage Parade, an event bursting with holiday spirit and cheer.
In addition, historic spots like the Glendower Historic Mansion and Arboretum get decked to the nines for the holidays, making for an extra enchanting and magical experience in Lebanon.
Where To Stay In Lebanon
For the quintessential Lebanon experience, you must book a night at the Golden Lamb, which, with its central location, makes for the perfect "home base" for your weekend getaway in Lebanon, Ohio.
This grand building has long been a fixture on Broadway in Lebanon and has been prosperous for many reasons.
It was originally situated halfway between Cincinnati and the National Road (now U.S. Route 40), making it the perfect resting spot for travelers. More than 200 years later, it continues to attract visitors and locals alike who wish to get a taste of both the history and the incredible food of the Golden Lamb. The Inn at the Golden Lamb has 17 overnight rooms that are well-appointed with modern comforts *and* beautifully decorated with winsome antiques ... and possibly a ghostly spirit or two. The Golden Lamb, you see, has a bit of a history ... and not the kind you typically read in history books! Politician Clement L. Vallandingham accidentally killed himself within the Inn, and the father of General William T. Sherman also died suddenly on the property. Since then, there have been many reported sightings of both men — many, many years after they passed away. One other common ghost story is that of Henry Clay's daughter, Eliza, who died of an illness at the Inn and was buried far from her Lexington home. She, like the ghostly gentlemen mentioned above, also seems to love The Golden Lamb.
Morning One: Coffee, Antiquing, And Exploring
Fuel up for a day of adventures in this beguiling Buckeye State town with brunch at The Breakfast Club Cafe. A family-owned restaurant in the heart of historic Lebanon, The Breakfast Club specializes in "over-stuffed" pan-cooked omelets, gourmet pancakes, and fresh, in-house roasted coffee. The portions are generous, and you'll definitely want to lick your plate clean to have energy for what's ahead!
Fortified and caffeinated, you are now ready to explore this charming little locale.
From home décor to jewelry to unique and affordable antique finds, it's no wonder USA Today called Lebanon one of the "Ten Great Places to Browse for Antiques," with shops such as Broadway Antique Mall (pictured), Ambassador's Antiques, and Lebanon Peddler's Mall providing ample space to shop to your heart's content!
Lebanon is also a place steeped in rich history, with beautiful Victorian architecture and points of interest in town.
When looking for things to do in Lebanon, Glendower Mansion is a town icon that's worth seeking out. Harkening back to 1835-1840, the hillside manor is noted as "one of the finest examples of Residential Greek Revival architecture style in the Midwest." In addition to touring its stunning halls, the grounds are equally resplendent, and, depending on when you visit, you might even catch part of a historical reenactment!
Afternoon One: History, Hiking, And Burgers
We're embarking on another historic adventure that's just minutes from Lebanon ... but feels an entire world — and century — away. Ft. Ancient is located just 15 minutes outside Lebanon, in beautiful Oregonia, Ohio.
Fort Ancient is a National Historic Landmark with the largest and best-preserved manmade earthworks in the country.
It's 100 acres of beautiful mounds that were used for protection, ceremonies, functional, and social purposes a long, long time ago. There are indoor and outdoor museums at Fort Ancient, but the main attraction here is, of course, the earthworks: a series of large, man-made, hand-built mounds. These well-preserved mounds helped the Hopewell people tell time and determine season changes, and you will be amazed at how this process worked. Fort Ancient is a living lesson in Ohio history that is sure to leave a lasting impression!
Back in town, dinner is at Black Horse Tavern, the sister restaurant to the iconic Golden Lamb (where we're bunking and will be dining tomorrow), and is perhaps Lebanon's best-kept secret.
The interior is the quintessential tavern with dark, warm woods and soft, low light. There's a long bar with vintage green lights that set the relaxed tone of the restaurant. If it's nice, however, we recommend dining outside to people-watch in Historic Lebanon!
One of the best things about Black Horse Tavern is the menu, as it’s filled with many of the favorites from the Golden Lamb.
Since we will be dining there tomorrow night, we recommend going for one of Black Horse's more casual menu items, like the Original Sticky Burger! This burger behemoth features house-made peanut butter, bacon, bbq, sharp cheddar, garlic aÏoli, and crispy onions, and is the kind of pub grub of which dreams are made!
Morning Two: Amusement Parks And Ice Cream
Lebanon is located in Warren County, known officially as "Ohio's Largest Playground." As such, it's only appropriate we visit the most famous "playground" in Warren County (and Ohio!) and one of the best activities near Lebanon: Kings Island!
For five decades, Kings Island has been *the* premier entertainment destination in the Midwest for millions of families seeking the best in rides, classic coasters, live entertainment, seasonal events, and so much more.
Roller coaster enthusiasts will flip (literally!) for legendary rides such as The Beast, Orion, and Diamondback, while families can check out Planet Snoopy and the park's classic rides, like the carousel and old-time-y Kings Mills Antique Autos.
Oh, and remember how we said winter was the best time to visit Lebanon?
Well, if you come in December, you can check out Winterfest, the most epic holiday festival in Ohio!
After a morning of thrills, it's time for a late lunch at Broadway Barrel House.
Located right in town, come and grab a plate of something hot and delicious! The vibe is laid-back and casual, and the menu has something for everyone.
Carnivores have a lot to celebrate here. The barbecue is a must-try, as are the slow-smoked ribs and wings.
If you're craving something meat-free, the flatbreads from Broadway Barrel House are delicious, too!
Save room for dessert, however, as we're headed to a town favorite next.
The Village Parlor is a quaint, old-school ice cream parlor and diner that's just oozing with nostalgic charm. Pro tip: get the Original Banana Split ... it's a classic for a reason!
Afternoon Two: Trains And Lebanon Legends
In addition to the Golden Lamb, Lebanon is well-known in Ohio as the home of the eponymous Lebanon Mason Monroe (LM&M) Railroad.
As its name suggests, the train operates on approximately 16 miles of track between Lebanon, Mason, and Monroe, Ohio.
For most trips, the LM&M train runs 4.4 miles south from Lebanon Station in downtown Lebanon to historic Hageman Junction, then back to the station, making for a scenic, two-hour afternoon adventure that's, as Goldilocks would say, "just right." For families, themed rides throughout the year take the LM&M experience to the next level, from character excursions featuring Curious George and The Cat in the Hat to seasonal events like the Easter Bunny Express and Polar Express.
After reveling in the bucolic countryside just outside of Lebanon, we're returning to our home base — this time, for a meal.
The iconic restaurant and inn is the oldest continuously operating business in Ohio, having opened in 1803.
Elevated pub fare with an emphasis on comfort classics, The Golden Lamb has long been a place for Sunday brunch, special occasions, and romantic date nights in Southwest Ohio.
If you haven't run into any of the "ghosts" haunting the Inn, you might have a chance encounter in the restaurant, whose menu is so tantalizing that many an unsettled spirit has tried to partake!
