Shaker Heights is a Cuyahoga County community of around 30,0000 residents. Niche gave it an overall score of A+, so it's truly a charming spot to settle down and put down roots.
The community gets its name from Shakers that once settled the area.
The Shakers lived in Shaker Heights well before the community name was designated. The Shakers, also known also as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, practiced their religion with passionate expressions of dancing, quaking, and movement... or shaking, if you will. As the group practiced celibacy, the Shaker settlers in this area eventually died off.
However, the community found its footing as a street car suburb when the Van Sweringen brothers brought rails to the city.
The Van Sweringen brothers were railroad moguls back in the day, and they thought Shaker Heights was the perfect suburban retreat from the city... so they enhanced it to be just that. Today, their influence is all around town, and nearly 70 percent of the town is covered by the historic district.
Niche ranked Shaker Heights as a dreamy place to put down roots based on few distinct categories.
