Take An Unforgettable Drive To The Top Of Ohio’s Highest Hill
Campbell Hill, the highest point in Ohio, offers a unique and charming experience with historical significance and easy access.
Ohio isn't known for having many high-elevation destinations. In fact, there aren't really mountains to speak of, unless you're referring to foothills. Nevertheless, there are some overlooks in Ohio worth seeking out. One of the most unique is the drive to the top of the highest point in Ohio: Campbell Hill. What the overview might lack in dramatic flair, it more than makes up for in charm. Plus, it's an item that you can check off of your bucket list.
While most people visit to experience the highest point in Ohio, others are fascinated and surprised by the history of the area.
The text on the historical marker reads the following: "Campbell Hill is named for Charles D. Campbell of Bellefontaine, who owned this land from 1896 to 1937. A marble stone marker atop the hill, set in 1900 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, marks it as the highest point in Ohio at an elevation of 1549.09 feet. In 1951, the federal government established the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) Squadron here as part of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD). Its military and civilian operators used sophisticated radar and computer equipment to locate and identify aircraft as friendly or suspicious and relayed information to a central site in Battle Creek, Michigan. This Cold War site operated until 1969. It was converted to civilian use as a vocational education center in 1974."
As many visitors have noted, it's not necessarily the most scenic spot in Ohio. The significance, however, is hard to deny.
While you're there, you can pick up a certificate stating that you've been to the highest point in Ohio. It's also a great place for a photo op!
Another appealing aspect of the attraction is that you can drive right up to it. This is much different than some of the other highest points in the U.S.!
In the future, there are plans to build a North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) exhibit, which should add even more interest to the area.
Whether you're a fan of unique roadside attractions or are looking to visit the tallest point in every state, a trip to Campbell Hill is one you'll enjoy.
