The Small Town in North Carolina That Feels Like Stars Hollow
Wander Highlands, North Carolina with a warm coffee in hand, a chill in the air, and crunching leaves underfoot.
Tucked high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Highlands, North Carolina, feels like something straight out of a cozy TV script. For fans of Gilmore Girls, the town is easily reminiscent of Stars Hollow, especially in the fall. The crisp mountain air, the burst of gold and crimson leaves, and the hum of downtown bring to mind Friday night dinners, quick-witted banter, and town meetings where everyone knows everyone else’s business.
In short, Highlands, like Stars Hollow, is a place where charm and community thrive side-by-side.

Downtown Charm Worthy of Lorelai and Rory
Downtown Highlands is the beating heart of this small mountain town, lined with boutique shops, galleries, and niche storefronts. The boutiques here are the kind that would make Rory pause between study sessions to browse for a new scarf, or Lorelai hunt for quirky home décor to spruce up the inn.
Walking along Main Street in autumn feels like stepping into a postcard. Colorful mums and pumpkins decorate storefronts, while the scent of warm sugar wafts from the Kilwin's candy shop. Imagine Rory debating between licorice and lemon drops while Lorelai sneaks a bag of chocolate truffles for later. That’s the energy the candy shop brings to Highlands.
The Grocery Store with the Best Breakfast Around
Stars Hollow had Doose’s Market, but Highlands has something better: Mountain Fresh Grocery. This is a small town grocery store that doubles as the place to get breakfast in town. Locals flock here for its hearty morning menu, and travelers quickly learn why.
The highlight (and my favorite menu item)? Cream-based, slow-cooked grits that are as silky and comforting as they sound. They’re a true Southern specialty, simmered patiently until they reach the perfect consistency. For something more Gilmore-esque, though, grab one of the muffins. Lorelai and Rory, with their coffee in hand, would absolutely have made muffins their staple here. The setting, casual and bustling with neighbors catching up, feels like a real-life extension of Stars Hollow’s community spirit.

A Gilmore-Inspired Itinerary
To fully embrace the Gilmore Girls vibe, plan your Highlands trip with a few Stars Hollow-inspired activities.
Start at the coffee shop. No Gilmore-inspired day is complete without coffee, and Highlands’ cozy coffee shop delivers in spades. Pick up a steaming latte or chai, find a corner seat, and let yourself imagine Luke behind the counter. Bring a book, or simply people-watch as locals trickle in. You’ll feel part of the town before your cup is empty.
Browse the vintage book store. Highlands has a wonderful independent bookshop, The Bookworm, with shelves of well-worn novels and new releases. It’s the kind of place Rory would lose herself in for hours, piling books into her arms until she could barely carry them. The creaky floors and old-paper scent make it irresistible, and in the fall, curling up with a newly discovered read feels even more magical.
Take a leaf-peeping (and waterfall-chasing) stroll. Much like Stars Hollow’s gazebo and town square, Highlands’ downtown begs to be admired on foot. Bundle up in a sweater and wander through the streets or nearby trails, where fiery autumn leaves crunch underfoot.

What makes Highlands feel so much like Stars Hollow isn’t just its appearance. It’s the spirit of the town: the way people linger over coffee, greet each other by name, and treat visitors like old friends. There’s a rhythm to life here that encourages you to slow down, enjoy the little things, and maybe even imagine that Kirk or Miss Patty might appear around the corner.
