Winter is the season for hibernation. Bears do it and we probably wouldn't mind crawling in a hole and sleeping through the cold dark days either. But winter doesn't have be all glum! In fact, there are plenty of beautiful things to see and do in our state during this season. Some special activities are actually unique to the winter. In order to fully enjoy them, you might just have to bundle up a bit! Have a great time at some of the best winter vacations in North Carolina.

1. Dry Falls

During the summer, Dry Falls is simply majestic. You can walk beneath the waterfall feel relaxed by the sounds of washing water. Come winter, it transforms into something out of this world. Sometimes, the whole fall will freeze. There's nothing as mystically wonderful as a waterfall frozen in mid-air! It's a great place for some unique pictures.

2. Hawksnest at Seven Devils

Hawksnest is one of the best tubing destinations in the East. They also offer a year-round zipline. if you are hoping for adventure this season, you will most certainly find it at Hawksnest at Seven Devils.

3. The Outer Banks

The famous and much-beloved Outer Banks seems always to be crowded in the summer and even spring and fall. It's a popular destination for people from all over the place. During the winter, though, the Outer Banks transforms into a tranquil, quiet, beautiful place miles and miles away from it all. It's a perfect way to explore all the sights while also getting some RnR at this North Carolina winter getaway.

4. One of our many ski resorts.

Everybody has their favorite ski resort, and if you prepare around the right conditions, you can have the ideal opportunity for some seriously awesome winter sports. Any of these great places feature some of the best winter activities in North Carolina. Pick one and make it a new family tradition that you will look forward to every year.

5. Ice climbing anyone?

Maybe you're craving some serious adventure this winter, and that's where ice climbing comes in. North Carolina has been considered to have some of the best conditions for this sport in the South. If you're not sure where to start you can take classes through Fox Mountain Guides & Climbing School.

6. Crowders Mountain

South of Charlotte you'll find Crowders Mountain. An awesome place to hike, catch some views, and explore nature. Luckily, Charlotte has fairly mild winters, making this a great year-round option for getting in a hike and getting in some fresh air.

7. Pilot Mountain

If you want to get away from it all, even without a lengthy hike, Pilot Mountain is the perfect option because you can drive to the top. I've been to Pilot Mountain on frigid February days and captured some surreal beauty on camera of icicles adorning trees and rocks. Located not far from Winston, it's a great option for those oddly warm Saturday or Sundays we will surely have.

8. Hanging Rock State Park

Another great, central option for a warm day in winter in North Carolina is Hanging Rock State Park. You'll find plenty of trails, waterfalls, and breathtaking overlooks.

9. Wilmington / Wrightsville Beach

Winter is a great time to explore the charming town of Wilmington, minus the usual Summer crowd. You can also spend a day to yourself along the coast. We don't mind waking up at 6AM to drive to the beach during the summer...but it's also totally worth it during the winter too!

10. A drive through the Western region of the state to get a glimpse at snow-covered trees.

Conditions might not always allow for taking a drive, but when they do, we are sure you'll agree that the sights are stunning. You'll get to see large ice glaciers hanging off rocks- sometimes right beside the highway- and miles of trees with branches covered in snow. It is such a magical sight to see. The roads you will drive through really are some of the best places to visit in North Carolina in winter.
