New York State is rich in railroad history. The first successful steam railroad running a regular service in New York operated way back in 1831 between Albany and Schenectady.

Today, the Adirondack Railroad, operated by the non-profit Adirondack Railroad Preservation Society, has restored track, trains, and historic stations. Eventually, the organization's plans to run trains from Utica to all the way to Tupper Lake.

The crew is mostly made up of volunteers.

Currently, passengers can ride the trains from Utica to Remsen and back again. This is a wonderful route. A ride on the Cabin Fever Limited departs at 11 a.m. and takes three hours round trip.

At the turnaround point, you'll be able to enjoy a campfire and snacks at the Remsen Depot - weather permitting.

Adirondack Railroad owns and operates several different engines. Some date back to the 1940s. It also owns a number of railcars including a domecar, a dining car, and others.

You'll love relaxing on these trains and watching the world go by.

A ride on the Adirondack Railroad is very nice at any time of year, but it's especially lovely in the fall.

And, as you might have guessed, Adirondack Railroad runs a Polar Express experience in December each year.

After your train ride from Utica to Remsen and back, it's time to head to your very special vacation rental in Skaneateles. The drive is a little over an hour. This 1930s railcar has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and can sleep up to seven guests.

It's stationary, of course - but what a lovely location. It's right on the banks of Skaneateles Lake. You'll love the deck. In warm weather, you can go boating and swimming.

The interior of the train car is spacious and roomy. There's a living room and a kitchen.

There's room for the whole family to sleep comfortably.

This 1930s train car is the perfect place to sleep after a long day of thinking about railroads. You're almost guaranteed to dream about trains.

You'll love this fun-filled, railroad-focused day! This is a great way to see the beauty of New York from two different train cars. You'll have so much fun and it's sure to be an adventure that you'll never forget.
