This Remote Swimming Hole In New York Is A Must-Visit This Summer
Canopus Lake in Hudson Valley is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and relaxing within Fahnestock State Park.
Canopus Lake is located off of Route 301, 9 miles east of the small Village of Cold Springs, New York. In the Hudson Valley region, there are limited selections for lake swimming, so this man-made lake is treasured by local residents. If you happen to be in the area—and we think there are plenty of reasons to want to visit the Hudson Valley—and are looking for a place to cool off, it’s a great choice. Canopus Lake is a 1.5 mile lake that is situated within Fahnestock State Park, which is 14,086 acres in total.
Because it's inside of a park, the lake and sandy beach makes for a perfect way to relax after a long hike.
Canopus lake offers great fishing options, too. You can catch Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Brown Bullhead, Bluegill, Black Crappie and Yellow Perch. Statewide fishing regulations apply. There are trails on the perimeter of the lake which work well for anglers.
If you feel like staying the night, there are campsites available on the park.
There is only parking for 10 cars at this small lake, and it fills up.
Rowboat rentals are available, too.
If you are looking for a great lake in the Hudson Valley that's a bit off the beaten path, but still accessible, we recommend Canopus Lake.
