You’ll Want To Visit The Snowiest Town In New Mexico This Season

The snowiest place in New Mexico is the mountain town of Red River. Based on meteorology reports over the past 30 years, the town has averaged a total annual snowfall of 151.1 inches. That translates into 12.59 feet of snow. Having a tough time picturing that much powder? Imagine Mohammed Ali standing on top of Babe Ruth’s head and you’re almost there! Not only is this kind of powder perfect for winter sports, the snowiest place in New Mexico makes for a magical setting, satisfying your craving for a winter wonderland. Red River Ski Area is open year round, but it's best enjoyed under a thick layer of fresh snow.

Red River is stunning year round but in cold months, it transforms into a winter wonderland. The town is located in the Southern Rockies, 36 miles northeast of Taos.

This is truly a resort town with a population of only 447 during the 2010 census. What it lacks in year-round residents it makes up for in fun.

While many towns close down during the winter, Red River kicks into high gear, with lots of fun annual events.

On both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, there is a torchlight parade at Red River Ski and Summer Area, along with a fireworks display.

The fireworks look extra magical exploding over the crisp white snow.

At the Enchanted Forest Ski Area (Red River has no shortage of skiing locales), you can ski along a three-kilometer-long loop that is lit by luminarias.

This takes night skiing to a whole new level. You'll not only get to experience the natural beauty at night, but feel like you're in a storybook along the way.

In Red River, January means it’s time for the Winter Carnival and a little known activity called “skijoring.”

Think of it like waterskiing on snow only, instead of being pulled by a boat, people are towed behind a horse or ATV. Now that’s an entertaining sport to watch.

Keep an eye on the calendar for the skijoring matches and other exciting happenings around the compound.

Of course, you can stick to more traditional winter activities like sledding in Mallette Park or tubing at Red River Ski and Summer Area.

There's nothing quite like the thrill of hurtling down a mountain in a tube, bracing for air time as you go over a bump in the snow.

You can ski and snowboard here as well, shocking, we know.

There are a huge number of ski sites to choose from at all ski levels. You can also take classes to hone up your skills before hitting the mountain.

...Or go snowshoeing along the trails.

This is a great workout and also allows you to truly appreciate the natural surroundings you're basking in. Keep an eye out for local flora and fauna on your way.

If total relaxation is your priority, curl up with a mug of hot chocolate and watch deer pass by your window. This is also a great option if you'd prefer not to get too up close and personal with the wildlife.

Clear crisp nights provide excellent opportunities for stargazing.
