The holiday season in New Mexico is truly enchanting, and not just because it's called the Land of Enchantment. Many of the state's towns and cities embrace the spirit of the season, going all out with decorations, parades, light displays, and winter activities.
Christmas in New Mexico is our favorite time of year because, each night, the state is lit by the glow of farolitos, or warm paper lanterns. Our traditions are all around, drawing in locals and tourists alike to take in the wonder. With that, here are the best Christmas towns in New Mexico—and we can't wait to visit.
1. Carlsbad
Carlsbad, New Mexico, is home to a light spectacular that you’ll never forget. Christmas on the Pecos is a major and unique event from November 30 to December 30, where you view more than 100 light displays while floating down the river. Or, check out the wonderful WildLights at the Living Desert Zoo, which was named one of the best zoo light displays in the nation! The event runs from November 25 to December 30 (closed on Christmas Day). General admission tickets start at $22.
2. Albuquerque

The Duke City, aka Albuquerque, New Mexico, is magical in December. Be wowed by the River of Lights at the ABQ Biopark Botanic Gardens (open from November 29 to December 30), marvel at the Old Town Plaza's storefronts and gazebo draped in decorations, or sign up for the Christmas Eve luminaria trolley tour. Tickets for the trolley tour go on sale on Black Friday. Albuquerque even has a giant snowman made out of tumbleweeds—talk about unique traditions.
3. Los Alamos
The Winter Fest in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is sure to put you in the holiday spirit. From December 5 to 7, experience live music, holiday light displays, and more on Main Street, including the town's winter parade on December 6 at 6 p.m. Then, on Christmas Eve, visit Ashley Pond to see spectacular light displays along the water. The rest of the month is filled with plenty of other winter-themed activities, from outdoor ice skating to skiing at Pajarito Mountain.
4. Alto
Alto, New Mexico, turns into a winter wonderland every year with its stunning ski slopes—perfect for all your favorite winter sports. Head to Ski Apache Resort to ride the ski lift and hit the multi-level slopes. (Winter dates are TBD; reserve season passes here.) Or, visit Ruidoso Winter Park, which is technically located in Alto, for its winter season, beginning Thanksgiving Day. 5. Madrid
In historical terms, Madrid, New Mexico, is the ultimate New Mexican Christmas town. Back when it was a company-run, coal-mining village, its light display was so extraordinary that airlines detoured flights to give passengers an aerial view of it. Now, the town hosts an annual Christmas Parade (it will be on December 6 at 4 p.m. this year) and on select Saturdays in December, stores stay open late to invite holiday shoppers. You may even experience an impromptu Santa sighting.
6. Mescalero
Mescalero, New Mexico, is home to the treasured Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino, which is always beautifully decorated for the season. From the lights on the fountain and statues out front to the garland and festive cheer throughout the resort's lobby, you're sure to feel some cozy holiday vibes with a traditional New Mexican flair. The whole family can also take part in the Path of Lights from November 30 to December 31—a walk-through winter wonderland right on resort property.
Then, while you're in the area, bring the whole family to nearby Ski Apache in Alto, and enjoy a torchlight fireworks display to get into the festive spirit. (Upcoming season dates to be announced.)
7. Taos
Another ski town that’s a wonderland around Christmas is Taos, New Mexico. The plaza is the festive hub, illuminated with Christmas lights, and at the Taos Pueblo, Christmas Eve is marked by mass, bonfires, and a religious-themed procession. The Taos Pueblo's St. Jerome Church is adorned with Christmas trees, lights, and ornate decorations on the inside, too. It's truly a sacred and magical place to be during the holidays.
Taos Pueblo is open Christmas Eve from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (for the bonfire and procession) and all day Christmas Day (including for the deer dances). Ticket prices vary.
8. Belen
One of the oldest towns in the state, Belen, New Mexico, is the place to be if you're searching for affordable but impressive Christmas light displays. Drive by the Harvey House Museum—a historic building run by the public library—and other stately buildings covered in festive decor. Or, kick the festivities off early at Belen's City Hall for the annual Christmas tree lighting, taking place on November 17 at 7:30 p.m., or the Miracle on Main Street holiday event, on December 13.
9. Las Cruces
During Christmastime, New Mexico State University in Las Cruces becomes covered with luminarias—paper lanterns with votive candles inside. These beautiful lanterns are considered a New Mexican tradition during the holiday season. Beyond creating this warm glow, the university also puts on several events in December, including A Christmas Carol (from November 29 to December 6), performed by the school's theater troupe. You can also visit Las Cruces Downtown Plaza on December 6 for the annual Christmas tree lighting.
10. Angel Fire
Angel Fire, New Mexico, is absolutely bewitching in December. The Angel Fire Resort is the perfect place to get in your winter skiing and snowboarding—and witness an incredible Christmas Eve torchlight and fireworks display right on the slopes. 11. Santa Fe
In Santa Fe, New Mexico, the trees in the Santa Fe Plaza look like jewels during the holidays, wrapped with colorful, twinkling lights. After taking a stroll through this winter wonderland, stop by Santa Fe's Botanical Garden for La Luz De Las Noches—a light display complete with drinks, food, and music—from December 18 to 31.
Christmas Eve is also marked by the extremely popular farolito walk along Canyon Road. Also, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet performs the Nutcracker (December 5 through 7 and 13 through 14), and groups like Santa Fe Desert Chorale perform Carols & Lullabies: Luminaria, from December 13 through 21.
12. Mesilla
Mesilla, New Mexico, has a beautiful plaza in historic Old Mesilla filled with tons of holiday decor. From the large Christmas tree (which will go up on December 5) to the decked-out gazebo and the warm light from the surrounding luminarias, you will be absolutely enchanted in this charming little town.
