A high priority on my very own bucket list, New Mexico is home to so many exceptionally cozy little towns. It might even be difficult to pin down which one to visit. Peñasco, New Mexico is a historic small town in Northern New Mexico, tucked away in the state's mountainous landscape. It's one of the most underrated destinations in the state, maybe even the country!
First off, just where is Peñasco, New Mexico? Well, drive along the winding High Road to Taos Scenic Byway and there are two things you'll encounter: beautiful views in the mountainous terrain and adorable small towns.
Among those, Peñasco is a historic town that barely has a population of a little over 1,000. Rich in agricultural and geological history, this is one little town you don't want to chance passing up.
What is there to do around here? First of all, the views from Peñasco, NM are spectacular. Soak them up with a drive, nature walk, or...
...hit the slopes at the nearby Ski New Mexico.
This location is a little quieter than some of the larger ski resorts, so you will love riding down the slopes. They also have weekly special events, including open mic nights, a s'mores social hour, and a super cool beer scavenger hunt. Places like this help make Peñasco one of the best small towns in New Mexico.
Meanwhile, back in town, you should pay a visit to Peñasco Theater.
