Dream Spring Break in New Jersey: Where I’d Go if Money Was No Object

Visiting Wildwood for spring break is a great way to discover some of the Jersey Shore's most unique off-season surprises.

When it comes to spring break in New Jersey, it's not surprising that many people think about heading down south. There's always something to do in the Garden State, but it does take time for the northeast to warm up, and many dream of fun in the sun after a long winter. But the thing is, I find that some of New Jersey's top summer destinations have a unique charm of their own in spring.

A classic case is the Jersey Shore, where the top vacation towns are just starting to come out of hibernation. In particular, I've always wanted to visit Wildwood for spring break and see a different side of this massive shore destination. It's not just lighter on the crowds; it can be lighter on the pocketbook, too, as off-season rates in the area tend to be rock-bottom. But my favorite thing about Wildwood is that there's something for everyone - whether you're here on a budget or looking to go all-out for a spring getaway, you're in luck.

During the summer, the Wildwood area is packed every single day. The chaos is a blast, but it can be overwhelming. During the off-season, when there's still a slight nip in the air, it's very different and can almost feel peaceful.

But don't be fooled by the quiet; Wildwood is open for business for spring break! All the hotels are taking reservations at a fraction of the summer rate. There are plenty of modern beach resorts, but if you want a taste of true old-school Wildwood, I highly recommend a night at the Caribbean Motel, the town's most historic Doo-Wop-style hotel. But if you're really looking for a luxury getaway, the Madison Resort Wildwood Crest is the area's newest hotel and it's packed with dining and recreation options.

While many of the top summer attractions are yet to open for the year, there is plenty to do in Wildwood during the spring. It's an excellent opportunity to visit lesser-known attractions, like the nearby Naval Air Station Wildwood, a fascinating aviation museum. If you're ready for a high-octane specialty experience, why not go for a ride with Atlantic Parasail, the state's most experienced Parasailing company?

One of my favorite things to do in Wildwood is snack along the boardwalk. Many of the best stands are open and serve boardwalk fries, fried foods, and more. The Doo-Wop Diner offers great NJ diner grub in a unique retro setting if you want something more substantial. But if you're really looking to go all out, a dinner at Santorini - an acclaimed Mediterranean restaurant about a mile's walk from the Boardwalk - is the ideal splurge in town. The cocktails, fresh seafood, and grilled lamb are sensational.

While the massive Morey's Piers amusement complex is mostly closed this time of year, it does start offering limited weekend hours later in spring. But even if you don't want to ride, it makes an incredible backdrop!
