The northern part of New Jersey, bordering New York State, is a very interesting place for those looking for hidden gems. It's not far from New York if you're driving and is on major transit lines, but it feels like a million miles away when you're living in one of these charming small towns. One example is Mahwah, which has a population of around 26,000 people but still maintains a unique small-town feel. The proximity to some of the state's most beautiful natural areas, along with the gorgeous architecture, made me feel like I was on the set of a rustic small-town TV drama when I was visiting - and I was blown away by just how many great things to do in Mahwah, NJ there are no matter the time of year. So come with us and discover why Mahwah should be your next day trip - or your new home base.
Mahwah may be within view of the NY skyline, but it's a uniquely peaceful spot in New Jersey.
The town is home to Ramapo College, which has one of the most beautiful entryways in the entire state - especially during the fall.
It also borders the Ramapo Valley County Reservation, a relaxing place to walk among nature. This is the beautiful Scarlet Oak Pond.
Secor Farms, an all-season family farm, is popular during major holidays and is usually packed with pumpkin-pickers or those seeking delicious treats.
The farm will be reopening shortly for its Thanksgiving pie season - and then comes visits with Santa!
The top restaurant in town is the Mason Jar Family Restaurant and Bar, a classic old-school joint.
The inside of the place is just as rustic as the rest of the town, transporting you back to an old-school saloon.
The special here is barbecue - and it's exactly the kind of filling meal you crave after a day of exploring.
