What Makes New Hampshire so Colorful?

Obviously, New Hampshire is known as a prime destination for fall foliage. The maples, oaks, and birches glow spectacularly with fiery reds, oranges, and golds in the White Mountains. But locals will tell you that the Granite State is bursting with vibrant colors no matter the time of year.

The seasonal wildflowers in the forests and meadows light up the countryside in the spring and summer. Gardens and parks also blaze with roses, tulips, perennials, zinnias, dahlias, and more. And when the season is frosty, the small towns light up, especially when covered in snow. It’s easy to see why New Hampshire is loved by photographers.

Sugar Hill: New Hampshire’s Violet Wildflower Meadows

Spring in New Hampshire means flower farms, festivals, and cheery lupine meadows in Sugar Hill. The tiny town in northern New Hampshire is famous for its yearly lupine festival, held in early June. The vibrant blooms paint the countryside with purple, pink, and white, which look especially dreamy against the rugged peaks in the backdrop.

One of the best viewing areas is along Sugar Hill Road near St. Matthew's Chapel. For more inspiration, take a scenic drive through the hillside to nearby towns like Franconia, Bethlehem, Easton, and Littleton. Not only will you be treated with more violet spires, but these New Hampshire mountain towns are as charming as can be. Between the wildflower fields, scenic drive, and quaint towns, this is by far one of the best things to do in New Hampshire in spring. It will for sure brighten your day!

Summer in Full Bloom at Portsmouth

Portsmouth is easily one of our favorite small towns in New Hampshire. With its pedestrian-friendly downtown, coastal vibes, and historic charm, this beautiful town is perfect for a day trip. The waterfront gem is great all year round, though summer feels extra magical when Prescott Park explodes with colorful blossoms from June to August.

Nestled along the Piscataqua River, this lovely garden features brick pathways, water fountains, and pretty blooms. Here, you’ll find manicured lawns, surrounded by vibrant zinnias, dahlias, coneflowers, and black-eyed Susans. The rainbow of hues transforms the park into a storybook scene. Beyond the park, you can find cheery blooms throughout the town. While you’re in the area, stop by the nearby Fuller Gardens in North Hampton for more color inspiration. There’s no better way to spend a summer day than by exploring the colorful side of New Hampshire.

Two words—fall foliage! If I were to describe a quintessential New England autumn experience, it would be the scenic drive along Kancamagus Highway in Lincoln. As you wind through 34 miles of dense forests, flowing rivers, waterfalls, and rolling hills, you’ll be treated to a color explosion, featuring vivid reds, golds, and oranges, contrasted by the lush evergreens. If you ask me, this breathtaking scenery is one of the most colorful places in New Hampshire in the fall

You’ll want to carve out time to soak up the dramatic views from various overlooks. Seeing the rolling hills in the backdrop adds more life to the dramatic autumn scene. Photographers, leaf-peepers, and hikers, you’ll fall in love with this bucket-list-worthy scenic drive in New Hampshire. The best time to visit? The season peaks from late September to mid-October. Naturally, Mother Nature can be unpredictable, so be sure to use the Smoky Mountain Fall Foliage Map for more accurate predictions.

Gray Winter Skies Meet Bold Spirit in Nashua

The snow-covered mountains in New Hampshire are dreamy in the winter. But it’s the cityscapes that shine the brightest during this time of year. As the colors in nature fade and the skies become gray, urban art brings vibrancy and energy to the state. Positive Street Arts Mural, a local community movement in Nashua, is doing just that. The non-profit organization creates larger-than-life murals on buildings along historic Main Street, on underpasses, walls, and other surfaces.

You’ll find brilliant nature scenes, hero portraits, cultural scenes, inspirational, and bold abstract designs. In the New Hampshire winter, the visually stunning murals explode with vivid color and demand your full attention. On a pleasant winter day, take a walking tour through Nashua and let these beautiful artistic expressions add some sunshine to your day. If you want to soak up snowy scenes in Nashua, hike the two-mile Mine Falls Green Loop Trail in Mine Falls Park. When covered in snow, the trail is a dreamy winter wonderland.
