The Charming New Hampshire Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar

Locals love Wilton, a quiet town hidden away in New Hampshire's hills famous for its art scene.

Many towns in New Hampshire fall under the category of charming, rural, or even quintessential New England. It’s not to say that these areas are commonplace, but for those looking for something a bit different, there’s a hidden, artsy town in New Hampshire that offers just a bit more.

What Makes This Hidden Town in New Hampshire So Special

Tucked away in the hills that roll up to the Monadnock mountains, this small town is positively oozing with charm. Part of it is, of course, due to the landscape. As part of the New England area, Wilton offers all the benefits of the classic season progression. Mainly, this pertains to the famous fiery autumn colors that charge through the town as the weather starts to turn. But it also means blankets of snow and rivers freezing in winter, flowers and green pastures blooming in spring, and summers promising adventures and fresh produce.

Then, there’s the town itself. Although tourists haven’t really descended in droves upon the town as of yet, locals cannot help but feel as if it’s only a matter of time due to how driven the community has been in protecting its history and art scene. With many preserved historical buildings—the library from the 19th century is a favorite—antique shops, galleries, studios, and multiple ways to enjoy the theater, this tiny town is considered somewhat of an artist colony. Or, for those who want to be inspired by New England’s charms but want a rural, authentic feel, it seems more like an artist’s paradise.

Best Things to Do in Wilton

One could easily spend a day leisurely strolling through the quaint main streets, visiting the little shops and galleries, and meeting the local artists who put so much time and care into their work. Then, you might try out the local eateries that typically use farm-to-table ingredients, with Nelson’s Candies being a particular favorite for those who adore old-fashioned candy shops. Finally, take in a Wednesday farmers market or a play at Andy’s Summer Playhouse, or even visit Wilton Town Hall Theater.

But, there’s also much to see in the land around this quiet town in New Hampshire, and Wilton has put a lot of effort into making sure that this land stays beautiful. Known for forests and rivers, such as the Sheldrick Forest Preserve and the Souhegan River, this is a big area for winter sports like snowmobiling and sledding. Then, there’s the hiking potential. One popular option is Garwin Falls (40 feet long), and the Wilton Riverwalk is another favorite for those seeking romance. Then there are the water sports—fishing and swimming are the two top contenders—and Goss Park, which offers slides and diving in the summer.
