Escape to This Charming Mountain Town in Nevada Before Fall Ends
Fall is a favorite time of year to enjoy crisp air, changing leaves, and seasonal festivals in this gorgeous Nevada city.
Nestled against the Sierra Nevada mountains, Carson City shows off its “true colors” in the autumn. In the fall, the leaves start to change, and the air becomes crisp. Adventurers in this charming Nevada mountain town can explore fall foliage sights or embark on a ghost tour, among other, especially “spirited” ways to celebrate the season.

Awesome Outdoor Adventures
For outdoor lovers in Carson City, you can enjoy fresh air and mountain views along the new 16-mile Capital to Tahoe Trail, which offers access to the incredible trail system in the Sierra Nevada. This trail affords beautiful views of Carson City and Washoe Valley, which is rich with vibrant foliage in the fall. Or, for a shorter and easier route, try the 0.25-mile hike to the Kings Canyon Waterfall, with views of the 25-foot cascading Kings Canyon Waterfall at the end of the path.

Paranormal enthusiasts will love getting some steps in on the Carson City Ghost Walk tour, which runs through October. This trek leads tourgoers through the city’s Victorian-era architecture and history at many stops along the Kit Carson Trail. Visitors can hear tales of the wandering spirits spotted at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion, the Nevada State Mint, Bliss Mansion, and more.
Colorful, Cozy, Culinary, and Coffee
To kickstart a day of exploring, stop into Comma Coffee, which serves up warm beverages in a cozy atmosphere. Or, if you’re seeking a different type of “brew,” (but not “witches” brew), spend some time at The Fox Brewery & Pub, which offers outdoor seating with a fire pit where diners can warm up, grab a drink, and enjoy elevated pub fare. And find the best of all worlds at Alatte Coffee & Wine, which is a comfy, stylish café and wine bar serving a blend of specialty coffee and handpicked wines (you won’t have to choose between fresh-brewed espresso or a glass of fine wine). The menu here has a variety of pastries, light bites, and seasonal fare.
Seasonal Events Not To Be Missed
There are also several festive events happening across the state that showcase the rich arts and culture scene of Carson City. From Oct. 16-19, 2025, The Mark Twain Days Festival will celebrate one of America's most prolific, witty, wise (and wise-cracking) writers, Mark Twain. And on Oct. 17, the Mark Twain Days Festival features the Twain Train for travelers to board a historic rail car on the legendary V&T Railway.

From Oct. 18-19, 2025, the Harvest Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum offers fun for all ages with 30-minute train rides, a pumpkin patch, and more. And on Nov. 7-8, 2025, commemorate Día de los Muertos at the Nevada State Museum, which honors cultural traditions and remembers loved ones through festivities and symbolic offerings to a special altar, called an ofrenda. There will be music, art, and food in this bilingual celebration of life, family, and community.

Alternatively, travelers seeking a bit less spooky fun can enjoy the lively atmosphere of the Nevada Day weekend celebrations. During the last weekend in October (this year it’s Friday, Oct. 31-Sun, Nov. 2), Carson City rings in the Silver State’s anniversary with a lively parade, a beard contest, hot air balloons, and more.
