Constructed in 1870 from materials from recently-abandoned Fort Churchill, Buckland Station gives visitors a rare glimpse at early pioneer life in Nevada. The historic structure was most notably home to the Buckland family, but it served many purposes throughout the 19th century.
The story of Buckland Station starts with a man named Samuel S. Buckland who came to the area for ranching purposes. Buckland saw opportunity in Fort Churchill's abandoned materials and used them to create the two-story building that remains standing to this very day.
Buckland Station became known as a prominent rest stop for pioneers since the Central Overland Route passed nearby. In fact, it was such a popular stop for early travelers that it actually became an official Pony Express station.
Today, visitors can drop by Buckland Station for a fascinating look at our state's early history. The first floor of the historic ranch house has been turned into a small museum that's open to the public for tours.
Of course, the surrounding area is worth exploring as well! Buckland Station is a great hiking, camping, and picnicking destination. Additionally, Orchard Day Use Area can be found across the highway and boasts a 2.2.-mile Natural Trail along the Carson River.
It's impossible not to have a delightful time at Buckland Station. From the historical aspect of the old Pony Express stop to the blissful views and recreational opportunities, there's something for everyone at this awesome destination.
