At this point, it's difficult to find any article listing the best small towns in America and not see Whitefish on it. There's no doubt that this little Flathead County gem leaves a lasting impression on all who are lucky enough to discover it. Aside from its close proximity to Glacier National Park, its top-notch skiing, and the fact that it has the best lake beach in Montana, downtown Whitefish itself is spectacular. In fact, Whitefish, Montana, is one of the most walkable small towns you'll see anywhere.

Whitefish is one of the gateway towns to Glacier National Park, and is a small town that belongs on every bucket list. This town of approximately 8,500 residents sits on the shores of the massive Whitefish Lake, surrounded by breathtaking nature. While absolutely beautiful, this northern Montana town is also a major tourist hub, so while small, it still offers plenty of big-city amenities.

One of the best things about Whitefish is that it's a prime destination in any season. The annual Whitefish Winter Carnival always draws a crowd. And while summers obviously stay busy, the city looks incredible when it's dusted with snow. The area is also known for Whitefish Mountain Resort, home to world-class skiing. Here, you’ll find 110 named trails, 3,000 acres, four terrain parks, 11 chairlifts, and so much more. Plus, since Big Mountain received an average of 300 inches of snow, it’s the perfect place to spend a winter day.

And while we always recommend a visit to Glacier National Park while exploring Whitefish and the surrounding area, this corner of Montana also has plenty of hiking trails, biking paths, fishing spots, canoeing areas, and more. It's an outdoor lover's paradise, and you'll find it hard to go home after a few days of adventure and exploration.

If you love spending the day in nature and ending your evening with some fine dining, this is definitely the place for you. Downtown Whitefish is known for its extremely walkable streets. There aren't many towns in Montana that don't require a car, but if you're staying in downtown Whitefish, you can get around on foot just fine.

Just don't be surprised if you fall in love with this little city's culture. From the art galleries to the microbreweries, you can have a fantastic day without even getting behind the wheel.
