This Montana Christmas Town Is Straight Out of a Norman Rockwell Painting
This adorable Montana Christmas town is a must-visit during the holiday season. It's like stepping into a charming Christmas fairy tale.
Montana is a remarkably picturesque state, especially during the holiday season when snow often blankets the landscape. But there is a quaint little town that is resplendent with charm during the holiday season, and it’s a must-visit. You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped right into a Norman Rockwell painting, and these photos confirm it: Livingston is the most beautiful Montana Christmas town. Here are just a few reasons why you need to spend Christmas in Livingston, Montana.
Nestled along the Yellowstone River in southwestern Montana lies the rustic little town of Livingston. This town’s humble beginnings can be traced back 140 years to its early days as a farming and railroad hub. With approximately 9,000 residents living in Livingston, it still maintains its small-town rustic appeal, especially around Christmas, and the Light Up Livingston event is something from a Christmas fairytale.
Every year, volunteers gather to string together thousands of beautiful lights in parks and neighborhoods around town. Adorably festive touches can be found everywhere you look; from bedazzled trees to glimmering locomotives, you can almost feel the Christmas spirit in the air. Break out the wool mittens and winter parkas and go for a wintery stroll along the many decked-out sidewalks.
The Light Up Livinston event kicks off on Nov. 29, 2025, at Depot Park. Here, the trees throughout the park are adorned with more than 100,000 holiday lights. There are many activities for the entire family that day, including free kid activities, massages, candy cane hunts, hayrides, holiday character visits, and, of course, good food and drinks. Children can even sit on and visit with Santa.
Locals and visitors alike are also encouraged to visit the many locally owned shops and restaurants around town throughout the holiday season, and even participate in a Downtown Business-led Small Business Saturday Passport activity with prizes and more.

Of course, the holiday lights are one of our favorite aspects of this holiday event, and are turned on throughout the new year, helping to make you smile on those cold December days. But, you'll also find tucked away in the parks the occasional gazebo surrounded by snow-covered trees, creating the quintessential winter wonderland scene. And destinations, such as The Living Hope Church, which is among several historic churches throughout Livingston, look even more beautiful in the midst of a snowy winter night.
You’ll be captivated by the stillness in the crisp air and the smell of fires roasting from nearby chimneys as you make your way down holiday light-adorned streets. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect Christmas town in Montana than charming Livingston.
And if you're looking to get out and explore the Christmas lights in a unique way, this Christmas lights road trip takes you right through Livingston and several other adorable Christmas towns in Montana. Just make sure you are prepared for the long drive with the right road trip gear and delicious car-friendly snacks!
