St. Louis Is a Walkable City in Missouri Known for Its Parks and Museums
St. Louis is known for an assortment of things, but its remarkable walkability is something that never gets discussed enough.
Okay, alright - first, I'm going to state the obvious: St. Louis, Missouri, is a city we've written plenty about. From all the best one-hour activities in St. Louis to all the coolest things invented in St. Louis, it's easily one of our all-time fave cities. But did you know that it's also one of the most walkable cities in the entire nation? It's true - St. Louis, Missouri, is a remarkably walkable city, and I highly recommend a weekend out and about without the car. Try it - it's fun!
Fun fact: There's a thing known as a walkability score, and St. Louis scores quite highly - a "walk score" of 80 means that the city is VERY walkable - significantly more so than most cities in the United States. Thus, you don't have to worry about the rental car so much - you probably won't need it anyway.
So, my fellow walkers, what are some things to do in St. Louis that don't require driving? Plenty! You could make an entire trip out of it - and I encourage you to. Numerous neighborhoods are filled to the brim with restaurants, eateries, local mom-and-pop shops, and more. Great starting points readers suggest include the Central West End (called "the CWE" by locals), Delmar Loop, and the Grove. Each of these neighborhoods is the epitome of walkability, with easy access to public transport if you decide you want to meander a little further.
St. Louis is famous for a few things: that amazing arch, for one, but also its incredible dearth of museums and educational attractions. The incredible St. Louis Art Museum is a wonder in and of itself, and like many attractions in the city, it can be easily reached on foot. Other delights include the Museum of Transportation, the Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum, and more. Best of all, many of these museums are free - score!
You can start your wander from almost anywhere and experience many delightful shops and restaurants. Notable must-do dining experiences include places like The Fountain on Locust, Winslow's Table and Bakery (which is just minutes from the Delmar Loop), and many more.
Another branch of the must-do tree in St. Louis is the various parks and recreation spots. The above gazebo can be found at Forest Park; in the spring, it's an incredible place to visit, with seemingly endless wildflowers and greenery that will bring peace to your spirit unlike anywhere else. I truly love this place.
Other heavenly parks in St. Louis are also top-notch, like the William F. Dierberg Meditation Park, Oak Knoll Park, and so forth. I strongly recommend visiting every park in St. Louis and choosing your favorite one for yourself!
So there you have it: the first few reasons St. Louis is the best - and you don't even need a car. Of course, there are many more reasons this city is awesome, but these ones make for ideal starting points. Explore the city neighborhood by neighborhood - it's worth it.
