This Small Mississippi Town Will Capture Your Heart

Tucked away in the southwest corner of the state, Woodville is by far one of Mississippi’s best kept secrets. The small town has a lot of history and even more charm; not to mention it's home to one of the best outdoor recreation areas in Mississippi.

Located in Wilkinson County, Woodville is a charming town home to less than 2,000 residents. It was chartered in 1811, making it one of the oldest cities in Mississippi.

Loaded with history, Woodville was once the home of Edward McGehee, a successful businessman credited with starting the first railroad in Mississippi, as well as Jefferson Davis.

Davis’ former home, the Rosemont Plantation was constructed ca. 1810. It was restored in 1971 and has since been opened for touring.

At the focal point of Woodville’s downtown, you’ll find the picturesque Wilkinson County Courthouse,. Built in 1903, it's actually the third to be constructed on the site.

However, the massive “Jefferson Davis Oak” located in front of the courthouse is much older, dating back to 1775 – 1780.

The historic Branch Banking House can also be found in downtown Woodville. Built in 1819, it’s the oldest existing bank building the in the state and now serves as the African American Museum.

Venture around town and you’ll find plenty of quaint churches from yesteryear.

Woodville is also home to one of Mississippi’s “most beautiful outdoor treasures,” the Clark Creek Nature Area. Comprised of varying terrain and more than 50 waterfalls, the area spans over 700 acres and includes both primitive and improved hiking trails.
