This Little-Known Waterfront Town Is One of the Most Charming in Mississippi

With its walkable Main Street, coastal views, and laid-back vibes, this little-known waterfront town in Mississippi is worth the trip.

Pass Christian is a little-known waterfront town in Mississippi full of beauty and charm. Yet, it flies under the radar and is by far one of the most overlooked (and if I may add, underrated) destinations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. When neighboring places like Biloxi, Gulfport, and Bay St. Louis are buzzing with crowds, those in the know will opt for the quieter corridors of this laid-back community.

With its pristine sandy beaches, charming oak-lined streets, and Colonial-style homes, Pass Christian has a rare mix of culture, tradition, and beach vibes, combining everything we love about coastal destinations in Mississippi.

Why This Little-Known Waterfront Town in Mississippi Is So Charming

Pass Christian, lovingly nicknamed “The Pass,” is a town with a population of about 6,000 residents. After suffering devastation from not one, but two major hurricanes (including Katrina), the spirit of the community remains alive and well. Its unique name comes from combining two things: a deep-water channel (pass) and early French settler Nicholas Christian L'Adnier, who lived near the waterway.

Even though it’s only 35 miles west of Biloxi, too many visitors actually “pass” it, not realizing they missed out on its quiet beauty and charm. What I like about this community is that it’s not trying to compete with nearby bustling tourist hubs. With its quiet shoreline, uncrowded pedestrian-friendly streets, and preserved architecture, Pass Christian fully embraces its identity as a slow-paced and relaxed coastal destination.

It’s a town with friendly folks, where everyday life revolves around community events, gathering at local restaurants, peaceful beach strolls, and fishing on the harbor. If you’re anything like me and actually enjoy a slower rhythm while on vacation, this little-known waterfront town in Mississippi is for you, too.

What To See and Do in Pass Christian

A walking tour is the easiest way to get to know Pass Christian’s unique character. You really don’t need a car here, but renting a bike would be ideal. In downtown, along Davis Avenue, near the harbor, you’ll find a mix of colorful and muted storefronts with historic 19th-century buildings.

At first glance, the town looks new (since it had to rebuild from the hurricane), but as you continue to stroll by oak-lined streets with gorgeous old homes and manicured lawns, as well as historical sites, the town will surprisingly feel old and authentically southern.

There are several places to shop if you want retail therapy. Stop by Pass Christian Olive Oils and Vinegars to pick up top-rated infused oils and vinegars to add flavor to your meals. Robin's Nest in the Pass, (owned by the sister of famous talk show Robin Roberts), is the cutest little shop selling a wide variety of locally made goods, art, jewelry, and more. Another must-visit is Cat Island Coffeehouse. Come for the books, but stay for the ocean views, delicious coffee and pastries, and laid-back vibe.

Of course, you’ll also want to check out the beaches here, and Henderson Point will be the go-to destination. If you can, plan your day so that you can watch the golden sun glow in the evening skies. Take it from me, sunsets on the Gulf are pure magic.

Fishing on Pass Christian Harbor is a fun way to tap into the town’s maritime history. Believe it or not, Pass Christian was a popular yachting destination, and even President Roosevelt vacationed and sailed here. Hire a fishing charter and spend the day catching speckled trout, redfish, flounder, and more. You can also stroll the harbor, checking out all the sights and sounds, including the dreamy sunrises and sunset views.

If you get hungry, Shaggy's Pass Harbor is the place to be. This vibrant beachfront restaurant is known for its fresh seafood, live music, and incredible views. It’s the kind of place where you could eat, sing, and dance the night away; it will feel like you’re in the islands. Don’t skip Bacchus On The Beach, Whiskey Prime, or Roberts Place Cafe, all locally-owned and serving delicious food.

Get to know the locals at the farmers market at War Memorial Park, or come for the Jazz Festival on Memorial Day weekend. For such a quaint little beach town, there is so much to keep you busy. Its compact size will have you thinking you could explore the town in a day, but I think Pass Christian deserves more attention than that.

Plan to be here for several days to experience all that this town has to offer. You can easily add this as a stop when visiting Biloxi or Ocean Springs. Or on the MS Gulf Coast Scenic Byway that passes through Gulfport, Long Beach, and Bay St. Louis.

Best Time to Visit Pass Christian

Summers, of course, but Pass Christian is great no matter the time of year. Since the town is never too crowded, you can always experience a relaxed vacation when you visit. For the most comfortable weather, consider late April or early October. As the weather cools, the town relaxes even more, and the quiet coastlines become your very own private Mississippi Gulf paradise.
