Minnesota's small towns are not just the heart of our state, they are also places where many a historic event took place. From big inventions to famous crimes, here are a few of Minnesota's towns that have had the spotlight thrust upon them.

1. Tower

Tower set a record low temperature of -60 degrees Fahrenheit for Minnesota on February 2, 1996.

2. Northfield

The citizens of Northfield stop an attempt by the Younger gang to rob the First National Bank and run them out of town.

3. Austin

Austin is the site of the famous Hormel Workers Strike in 1985.

4. Lake City

Lake City is the birthplace of waterskiing, invented by Ralph Samuelson on Lake Pepin.

5. Stillwater

Stillwater mechanic Charles Strite invents the pop-up toaster.

6. St. Joseph

St. Joseph was the site of one of the country's most infamous abductions, when Jacob Wetterling was then on the way home from a convenience store. This would lead to the establishment of sex offender registries nationwide.

7. Hibbing

Hibbing was the town where Carl Wickman and Andrew Anderson started the first bus line so miners could get between towns, and it grew into Greyhound.

8. Pelican Rapids
