Life in the big city can be taxing. The traffic, the sprawl, and - dare we say - the rude people to contend with. Sometimes you just want to slow down the pace a bit and enjoy the scenery and small town charm that make life worthwhile.
Here, we've identified (with a little help from our readers) some small towns that achieve just that. Beautiful surroundings, friendly folks, and reminders of a simpler time here in Michigan.
1. Big Bay
This teeny unincorporated UP town is populated by some 300 people. We like that it sits right up against Lake Superior and boasts the impressive Big Bay Lighthouse, constructed in 1896.
2. Buckley
This town of about 700 is situated in the northwest region of the Mitten. Come August the community fills up with old-timey engines, all restored, and reminding us of earlier times.
3. East Tawas
Tucked away near the shores of Lake Huron, this town of about 2,800 enjoys its annual Tawas Bay Summerfest Car Cruise and Show, this year in July.
4. Greenville
The birthplace of the Meijer store and once known as the refrigerator capital of the country, this small city of about 8,400 still enjoys a quaint downtown district and lots of outdoorsy activities for the family.
5. Hemlock
This unincorporated Saginaw County community of about 1,600 was first settled in 1865 and to this day retains that small town charm.
6. Indian River
Looking for a quaint marine community, where you can gaze upon the beautiful Burt Lake in northern Michigan? This town of about 2,000 is your spot.
7. Ionia
This small city of about 11,000 swells up come July when its annual Ionia Free Fair rolls around. The event is considered the world's largest free admission fair in the world.
8. Luna Pier
It's about as close to the Ohio border as we care to be. The great thing about this town of about 1,400 is its access to Lake Erie, where fishermen and women can stock up all as much lake fish as they can handle.
9. Pinconning
Just outside of Bay City, this town of about 1,300 holds its annual Deer Acres Fun Park car show every summer.
10. River Rouge
This small city of about 8,000 is of extreme historical importance for Michigan, as it was a hub for industry.
11. Rose City
With just about 650 residents, this mid-Michigan town is surely a place where everyone knows your name.
12. St. Ignace
Once you reach the town of St. Ignace, population 2,400, you know you've finally reached the gateway of the Upper Peninsula.
13. Standish
Another small town not too far from Lake Huron, this community of 1,500 is considered the gateway to the state's "Sunrise Side," where you'll capture splendid views of the lake, with less of a crowd.
Kinda gets you inspired to check all these places out, huh? Tell us, since there are countless small towns across the Mitten, where are your favorites?
