Discover the Michigan Small Town That Looks Like a Hallmark Movie Setting

Charming Rochester, Michigan, would make a perfect Hallmark movie setting. With its charming downtown, beautiful outdoor spaces, and unflappable holiday spirit, Rochester exudes main charcter energy.

Rochester, Michigan, is a charming, wooded community that now lies within the extreme northern suburbs of the Detroit metropolitan area. The small city of just under 13,000 is much more than just a suburb, though. It is a town with its own history, its own traditions, and its own charm. Founded in 1818, Rochester was the first European settlement in Oakland County, even though it didn't technically become autonomous until its 1967 incorporation. Today, this town's delightful people, quaint downtown area, beautiful outdoor spaces, and vibrant celebrations lend it the kind of charisma that would make it the perfect setting for a Hallmark movie.

In the typical Hallmark movie story arc, two people—a man and a woman—meet in a delightful small town or city and, over the course of the film, fall in love with cinematic settings from the town as a backdrop. Well, there aren't many towns that exude as much main-character energy as Rochester, Michigan.

Its handsome downtown area is packed with restaurants and cafes, where our characters can linger over a meal or a pumpkin-spiced beverage of some sort. They can stroll along Paint Creek on the Downtown Rochester Riverwalk, perhaps stopping at a picturesque gazebo in Municipal Park for their much-anticipated first kiss.

In Rochester, as in many Hallmark movies, it's the holidays when the magic really happens. To say that Rochester goes all-out with its Christmas decorations and holiday spirit would be an understatement: It, frankly, epitomizes the phrase Christmas town.

Parks, lamp posts, and municipal buildings get gussied up in their holiday finery. Rochester residents definitely understand the assignment when it comes to exterior illumination, trying not to be outshone by their neighbors or local businesses.

The downtown area offers no shortage of "wow" factor during the holiday season. Each year, Rochester's downtown buildings are bedecked with more than a million dazzling lights. The whole town turns out to kick off the annual Big, Bright Lights celebration, which starts off with a bang: a fireworks show on the Monday before Thanksgiving. The lights are illuminated nightly throughout the holiday season and into mid-to-late January.

Even Oakland University gets in on the holiday action. Its campus Christmas lights rival those of many small towns, making Rochester all the more festive for our characters and their story.
