If you live here in Michigan, you might think you’ve seen all the state has to offer - but the Great Lakes State is overflowing with charming destinations and underrated towns. If you’re a fan of outdoor exploration, history, and family fun, there’s one town that belongs on your bucket list. Gather up your loved ones and plan a trip to this one-of-a-kind Michigan gem.
Grand Marais is located along Lake Superior in Alger Township.
This Upper Peninsula locale serves as an entry point to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and boasts a rich history alongside its natural charm. There’s so much to appreciate.
With a year-round population of under 400 residents, Grand Marais certainly qualifies as a tiny town. Don’t let its size fool you, though: the community is rich with fun and history.
The town’s history begins with the indengous Chippewa inhabitants, who called this shoreline region their home for generations prior to the arrival of settlers in the 1860s.
By the early 1900s, Grand Marais had grown into a hub for lumbermen, commercial fishing, and more. In fact, the lumber boom allowed the town to house around 3,000 residents.
Following the decline of the lumber industry, Grand Marais remained quiet until commercial fishing made a comeback in the 1920s, followed by enhanced tourism from the 1960s on.
Today, visitors will find all sorts of excitement in the area. In addition to the marvels of Pictured Rocks, tourists can also enjoy local beaches, campgrounds, and historic sites.
Whether you’re gazing at the water from atop the Log Slide Overlook or snagging a drink at the Dunes Saloon, Grand Marais will capture your heart in no time at all.
