US-23 Practically Runs Through All Of Michigan And It’s A Beautiful Drive

U.S. Highway 23 in Michigan runs all the way from Mackinaw City, Michigan to Jacksonville, Florida. Hugging the shoreline of Lake Huron for many miles, a stretch of this road is known as the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway, and it’s one of the most scenic drives in Michigan.

Today we’re going to explore the section from Au Gres up to Mackinaw City.

If you drove this section of US-23, it would take you about 3-4 hours, making it the perfect day trip, especially if you stop off at some of the attractions we’ve picked out along the way.

One of the first major stops along the way is Tawas Point State Park.

East Tawas is a delightfully charming town to explore, and it just so happens to be home to Tawas Point State Park, a 183-park overlooking Lake Huron. Be sure to check out the iconic Tawas Point Lighthouse before jumping back in the car.

Oscoda Beach Park is a great spot to get out and stretch your legs.

The views from Lake Huron Pier are endless!

You'll drive through many lovely towns and fun roadside attractions along the way.

This uniquely geographical fun fact is just one of many hidden gems along this scenic drive in Michigan.

This stretch of US-23 is known as the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway since the sunrises over Lake Huron are so mesmerizing.

It's worth it to wake up early for these dazzling displays. The Alpena light station, pictured above, is just one of many beautiful spots along this drive that are great locations to watch the sunrise from.

There are plenty of state parks peppered along the shorelines.

And once you reach Mackinaw City, a whole new adventure begins.

Obviously, the legendary Mackinac Bridge is a must. It's the fifth-longest suspension bridge in the world!
