Why Travelers Are Falling for This Small Historic Town in Massachusetts

You will be hard-pressed to find a Massachusetts city or town that doesn’t contain at least a little bit of interesting history. Our roots here in the Bay State run deep, and fortunately, those who lived here before us have left us with some fascinating sites to explore. While you can find lots of well-known historical places when you travel to communities such as Boston, Concord, or Lexington, a small historic town in Massachusetts, such as Essex, also contains some hidden gems worth visiting. If you are looking for a spot filled with rich history, good food, and unique shopping finds, this coastal community should be on your travel radar.

The History Behind This Charming Town

Essex is located on the state’s gorgeous North Shore. Tucked between Ipswich and Gloucester, this charming town houses fewer than 4000 residents. The beautiful community boasts scenic coastal salt marshes, historic homes, and the tranquil Essex River. 

Essex may seem like a quiet place to visit, but the town was once a bustling shipbuilding center. Approximately 4,000 boats were built here between 1668 and the 1940s. While you are in town, I highly recommend visiting the Essex Shipbuilding Museum. It is a great little spot where you can stop in to find out more about the history of the shipbuilding industry.  

If learning all about historic boats inspires you to spend some time on the water, you are in luck. Essex River Cruises & Charters is a local company that will take you out on a public or private boat ride around the peaceful Essex River. Be prepared to see even more historic sights and some stunning coastal wildlife. Even better, the cruise company can also arrange for you to have a beach clambake as part of your experience. Where to Eat in Essex

There is one more thing that puts Essex in the history books — the fried clam. Yes, that’s correct, this delicious seafood specialty was invented right here in Essex in 1916. You can still visit the spot where this unique dish got its start. Woodman’s of Essex is a legendary family-run restaurant that not only serves up some of the best fried clams in Massachusetts but also features fantastic lobster rolls, clam chowder, and steamers. This informal seafood shack is a must-stop when you are in town. The FARM Bar and Grille, another of my favorite local restaurants, is also a fantastic family-friendly spot to grab some delicious American comfort food.

Where to Shop in Essex

If you would like to take a piece of history back home with you, I recommend visiting one of Essex’s many antique stores. There are so many of these shops in town that Essex is often referred to as “America's Antiques Capital.” You never know what treasures you might find when you stop in to take a look.

Where to Stay in This Small Historic Town in Massachusetts

There aren’t any big hotels in Essex (you can travel to nearby Salem to find these accommodations), but if you are looking for a historic stay, I suggest driving a few miles to the city of Gloucester.
