Royalston is a tiny town surrounded by wildlife management areas and forests. Although it’s only about 76 miles from Boston, the pastoral setting makes the town feel much more remote. These green spaces appeal to hikers and the area’s lakes attract kayakers. The impressive waterfalls tucked away in the woods only increase this destination’s allure.
According to the last census, a scant 1,258 people call Royalston home.
But that's the point - you come here for outdoor adventure, nature, and solitude.
One of the main draws is Doane's Falls, a waterfall on Lawrence Brook that drops a total of 175 feet across several sections of plunges.
For a short jaunt into nature with spectacular views, hike the half-mile trail along the waterfall.
It's even stunning in winter!
This route is part of the longer Tully Trail, a 22-mile long loop that encircles Royalston. Here's the trail map.
Of course, you don't have to complete the whole circuit to view some of the prettiest places in Massachusetts. After visiting Doane's Falls, continue north to Spirit Falls and Jacobs Hill. This portion of the trail offers soothing scenery for hikers.
Should you wish to continue your trek, head further along the trail to Royalston Falls.
You can cheat and travel by car, as Royalston Falls lies a short distance - roughly 1.5 miles round trip - off Athol-Richmond Road. Be aware that taking the alternative approach along Falls Road involves dirt roads and bumpy conditions.
If you'd rather be on the water than beside it, visit Coddings Meadow or Tully Lake, a 200-acre lake that's great for kayaking or fishing (as always, you need a fishing license).
A tent campground abuts the water and provides a perfect spot for a weekend away.
Make your reservation early for dates between May and October here .
If that's a too rustic for your taste or if you're visiting during the colder months, check out MainFare Bed and Breakfast, 16 miles away in Ashburnham.
This shingle home is a charming place to unwind in county style.
Royalston itself has limited amenities; it’s a rural place to restore your spirit and admire the natural wonders of Massachusetts. Have you visited this beautiful part of our state yet? Share your experiences with us in the comments!
If you have more several days for adventure, consider adding on this waterfall road trip after you stop in Royalston. Now's a great time to plan your next vacation!
