Escape to This Charming Mountain Town in Maryland Before Fall Ends

Some of my fondest memories as a kid were road trips with my family to the mountains. Our destination of choice? The Poconos, of course! If you live in the Tri-State area or even in parts of the DMV, this region is the go-to spot for skiing, hiking, and water recreation. Sure, the popular tourist destination in Pennsylvania is an easy drive from the Old Line State, but I would argue that there are charming mountain towns in Maryland that are just as rewarding and worth visiting, especially during the fall season. 

One that immediately comes to mind is Thurmont in Frederick County. Surrounded by the eastern part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this underrated mountain town in Maryland comes alive with glowing autumn beauty. With access to Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park, Thurmont is a leaf peeper’s paradise and a photographer's dream come true. It’s the kind of destination where you can easily relax, play, and soak up the magic of the fall season in the most delightful way. 

Why Visit Thurmont in the Fall?

As one of the most charming towns in Maryland and a gateway to the mountains, Thurmont could arguably be our best-kept secret. With a population of 6,300 residents, this picturesque community is the perfect place to welcome the peacefulness of the autumn season. Its location at the foothills of the Catoctin Mountain means access to incredible hiking trails and scenic byways, making it the ideal destination for anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors. 

Famous for being home to Camp David, the Presidential retreat, the town is also known for hosting the Catoctin Colorfest, one of the largest fall festivals in the East. During the fall season, thousands of folks visit the charming town for its natural beauty and community events. But there is so much more to do here. 

Things to Do in Thurmont 

In my experience, the best way to learn about a small town is to take a stroll through its Main Street district, and Thurmont is no different. Here, you’ll find a delightful walkable village lined with historical storefronts, art galleries, quaint parks, and mom-and-pop restaurants. 

A must-visit spot is Thurmont Kountry Kitchen, where you can savor a down-home comfort meal that will literally warm your soul. Since 1984, this family-owned restaurant has been a staple in the community, and during the fall, expect seasonal treats waiting for you. Order the juicy broasted chicken platter and a slice of Red Velvet Cake, and thank me later! I’d also recommend the Thurmont Main Street Farmers Market, where you can shop for local crafts and yummy fall treats. 

Just a stone's throw away from the restaurant is the Thurmont Historical Society. If you’re here on the weekend, the museum is an ideal spot to meet local historians and to learn more about the town’s rich heritage. History buffs will have historical sites and landmarks in the area to explore, including the historic trolley along the Thurmont Trolley Trail.

Outside of the district, expect plenty of outdoor activities. During the peak of Maryland's fall season, which happens around mid-October to early November, the landscape is bursting with autumn beauty, which is pure magic. Carve out a few hours to cruise along the scenic road in the foothills of the mountains. There are overlooks to stop and really admire the orange, red, and golden hues of the changing season.

If you prefer a more intimate experience, plan day hikes at Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park. You’ll enjoy sweeping views of the gorgeous landscapes, and I can’t forget to mention Cunningham Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Maryland. With the glow of the autumn leaves, the scenery at the 78-foot waterfall is simply breathtaking. 

Another picturesque destination in Thurmont is the Roddy Road Covered Bridge. This iconic relic was built in the mid-19th century, and it’s the perfect place to capture fall foliage in Maryland. Take this covered bridge road trip through Frederick County to admire this, and two additional historic covered bridges in the area. As an amateur photographer who enjoys snapping random pics for my collection, I promise this short but sweet drive is worth it. 

Traveling with the little ones? Thurmont has tons of activities for them, too. Local farms like Catoctin Mountain Orchard and Pryors Orchards offer pick-your-own fruits, pumpkin patches, and lots of traditional fall activities. And the kiddos will also love playing with the exotic animals at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve.

My favorite part of Thurmont? The wineries! Boasting three wineries surrounded by stunning scenery, wine lovers will feel at home here. Catoctin Breeze Vineyard, Links Bridge Vineyards, and Springfield Manor Winery all offer a delightful atmosphere for picnics, leisure strolls, stunning views, and, of course, wine tasting.

If you can imagine a morning hike in the woodlands, glowing with gorgeous fall foliage, and then an afternoon sipping vino in the countryside, then this is the place for you. It's the kind of destination where you don’t have to rush through your day, but instead, stay and bask in the lovely vistas. I can’t think of a better place in the Old Line State to spend the fall than Thurmont. This charming mountain town in Maryland is worth visiting.
