Take A Drive Down One Of Maryland’s Oldest Roads For A Picture Perfect Day

Calling all history buffs! When you're up for a road trip, consider the following historic route through Maryland and beyond. Spend a few hours or a few days exploring the stops along the way and even stay the night at inns and more. There's no end to the adventures you can have along the Historic National Road.

Some people make it a life goal to hike the entire Appalachian Trail or the C & O Canal. For others, it's exploring the entire 620 miles of the Historic National Road.

Construction began in 1811 right here in Cumberland, Maryland. You can still find a monument marking the starting point of this historic route.

Maryland's portion of the road stretches for 170 miles. Choose to drive this route and you're in for a treat.

The western section offers mountainous scenery...

And Washington County's portion is full of history. Be sure to stop by Antietam National Battlefield along the way.

You'll pass by many charming downtown areas, including Frederick...

And eventually, you'll end up in Baltimore. Spend a few hours exploring the historic ships at the harbor or make time to chow down on steamed crabs.
