In the mood for an unexpected Maryland adventure? While there are a million and one ways to spend a day exploring around the Old Line State, today we have an extra unique day trip for you that is sure to be memorable! The following adventure in Washington County begins with a wondrous cave and ends with a meal at one of the best restaurants in the area. Now, wait a minute...there are caves in Maryland? Yes, there are! Let's check one out:
There's nothing better than chowing down on a filling meal after going on an outdoorsy adventure, and that's exactly what we have planned today. The best part is that the following two locations are only a six-minute drive from one another.
The adventure begins at Crystal Grottoes Caverns, located in Boonsboro, Maryland.
The caverns here were discovered in 1920 and have been open to tourists for decades.
But this isn't just any ordinary cave. It has more formations per square foot than any cave known to man.
All ages can enjoy this easy and fascinating tour. Don't forget to bring a jacket — the caverns are a crisp 54 degrees all year long.
The cost varies by age group, so plan accordingly.
After a bit of cave exploring, drive just six minutes down the road to fill your belly at Branded Chophouse on Old National Pike.
Branded Chophouse is one of the highest-rated restaurants in the area and for good reason. The food options are unique and flavorful, and best of all, filling. Have a seat in the casual, inviting atmosphere ...
...and consider starting with some salted truffle fries or fresh-baked bread.
Along with great regular menu items, the restaurant also offers regular specials, so there's always something new to try.
Keep it as light or as hearty as you wish! It's all delicious.
And don't forget to pair your meal with a brew, refreshing cocktail, or glass of wine.
There are plenty of craft beer options to choose from, so take your pick! Or have a flight and try a handful at a time.
After your fill at Branded, you could continue your Boonsboro journey by exploring the local antique shops or by visiting the nearby parks. Washington Monument State Park is just a drive away and has one of the best overlook views in the state.
Getting to explore Maryland belowground is such a unique experience! Learn more about Crystal Grottoes Caverns and Branded Chophouse on their respective websites. Note that tours typically run every half hour, and tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis unless you have a reservation.
As the most popular cave in Maryland, likely you've heard of Crystal Grottoes Caverns. But have you ever been? Give us your best tips!
While Maryland may not be known for its caverns, we do have a few man-made caves as well, like this fantastic spa salt cave! Or, for another one of the best day trips in Maryland, head to this city with historic buildings on nearly every corner. Tour old churches, mansions, and more along the way for a fascinating step back in time.
