Why Bar Harbor, Maine, the Gateway of Acadia National Park, Is Worth a Visit in Its Own Right

Planning a trip to coastal Maine? Even if you don't plan to hike Acadia, a visit to beautiful Bar Harbor is worth a visit.

Stunning Acadia National Park is a New England landmark that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. The park’s scenic trails, majestic cliffs, and spectacular wildlife draw visitors and nature enthusiasts to the area all year round. While the wonder of Acadia is no secret to tourists, many are surprised to discover the magic that lies just outside the park. The community of Bar Harbor is packed with so much unique New England charm that a trip to the gateway of Acadia is easily a vacation in itself. Let me tell you about some of the wonderful things this special place offers.

Bar Harbor is located on Maine’s Mount Desert Island and is a five-hour drive from Boston and about a three-hour drive from Portland. Less than 6,000 people live here permanently, but the town draws many visitors from around the world, especially during the peak summer and autumn months. Whether you come to visit Acadia or head up the coast just to relax and get away, a stop in Bar Harbor is definitely a must.

I don’t get a chance to visit this magical seaside region as much as I would like, but when I do, I’m all about getting out on the open waters. From windjammer cruises and whale and seal watching tours to stand-up paddleboarding adventures, there are so many ways to enjoy a day off-shore. You can even set out on a cruise where you get to see both adorable puffins and breathtaking lighthouses. I’m putting this one on my bucket list for sure.

And there is more to experience back on land, including some great museums and educational centers. The Natural History Center and the Oceanarium and Education Center both focus on science and nature, and the Abbe Museum highlights the culture of the Wabanaki people who once inhabited this area. Bar Harbor also has great shopping, bike tours, and even ghost walks.

The most difficult decision that you will have to make is choosing where to eat. Whether you prefer dining at a fancy waterfront restaurant or digging into a lobster roll at a seaside shack, you will find fabulous seafood wherever you wander in town. However, if you are in the mood for something a bit different, head over to Geddy’s, an eclectic spot on the outskirts of town where the whole family can enjoy a fantastic meal.

So enjoy the crisp ocean breeze and the beautiful coastal views. Hike Acadia, or sit back and do nothing at all. No matter how you decide to spend your days, you will discover that a trip to Bar Harbor is always good for the soul.
