Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Maine Before Fall Ends
Discover Maine’s charming mountain towns with fall hikes, cozy cafés, and unique shops. Plan your autumn getaway before the season ends!
Cooler air, fiery leaves, and small-town vibes—fall in Maine really doesn’t disappoint. Beyond the lobster rolls and lighthouses, the state has some seriously charming mountain towns that shine this time of year. Whether it’s hiking the trails, ducking into a cozy café, or exploring downtown shops, I’d put these towns near the top of any autumn list.
1. Bethel

Bethel is often called Maine’s prettiest mountain village, and it’s easy to see why. Grafton Notch State Park is nearby for some leaf-filled hikes, and orchards close to town make for a fun afternoon of apple picking. When it’s time to eat, Le Mu Eats serves up Lao-American dishes like the Porke’ Bowl, or you can grab a breakfast pastry and coffee at Gemini Café & Bakery—and don’t be intimidated by the line, it moves fast!
2. Rangeley

Rangeley feels like it was made for fall. The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway delivers sweeping mountain and lake views, with the Height of Land overlook being just one of many highlights. Back in town, grab a burger at Parkside & Main before browsing the local shops.
3. Greenville
Right on Moosehead Lake, Greenville is where adventure and downtime meet. You can head out on a moose-watching tour or take a scenic seaplane ride in the morning, then be back in town for a seafood dinner at Kelly’s Landing by night. The small downtown is fun to explore, with a handful of local stores to browse, like Mud Puddle Mercantile.
4. Kingfield
Kingfield, tucked at the base of Sugarloaf, slows down once ski season ends, which makes fall the perfect time to stop by. The Stanley Museum is a quirky little spot that tells the story of the Stanley brothers, and Rolling Fatties is a local favorite for inventive burritos. Scenic drives around here aren’t bad either.
5. Carrabassett Valley
Just up the road, Carrabassett Valley is all about the outdoors. Hiking and biking trails, such as the Narrow Gauge Pathway, wind through the mountains and along the Carrabassett River. In autumn, you can ride the scenic lift at Sugarloaf for panoramic foliage views, or head into the Bigelow Preserve for more rugged hikes.
6. Bridgton
Bridgton is the kind of town that blends mountain views with classic New England charm. You’ve got lakes and rolling hills close by for a picturesque drive, plus trails at Pleasant Mountain or Pondicherry Park for a crisp fall hike. The downtown is filled with boutiques, and the Magic Lantern Theater is still showing movies after more than a century. For food, Beth’s Kitchen Café is a go-to for breakfast or lunch.
7. Farmington
Farmington’s got a mountain backdrop, but there’s a buzz around town thanks to the college crowd. Flint, Village, and Booney Woods are the places for biking and hiking. On Main Street and around the campus, there’s a lot to browse—shop windows, murals, and indie stores. Java Joe’s does a solid coffee and muffin to kick off your day, and Tuck’s Ale House is the go-to for a lobster roll and is worth popping into before you hit the road again.
From lakefront towns to ski villages that are just as fun in the off-season, these mountain towns in Maine are made for autumn. Grab a bite, get outside, and enjoy the slower pace before the season slips away.
