The Charming Maine Town That’s Perfect for a Fall Day Trip

Discover the charm of Searsport, Maine—maritime history, fall foliage, Moose Point State Park, and small-town magic await!

Maine is an undeniably beautiful state with so many noteworthy places to explore, even in the tiniest towns and villages. Turns out, we can pack quite a punch with most of the jaw-dropping small towns in Maine, where everything seems to be peaceful. Personally, I think autumn is the best possible time to experience these small towns—it's breathtakingly beautiful, and you'll have to see for yourself! Take, for example, the beautiful small town of Searsport. With a population of just over 2,600 people, it's one of those places where everyone will know your name before too long.

Searsport was settled in the 1760s, though it wasn't officially incorporated until 1845. The town is known for its long, strong maritime history. In the 19th century, hundreds of deep-water sea captains sailed from Searsport to destinations as far as India and China. Upon their return, they'd have grand houses built to enjoy after their worldly adventures.

Today, the town is still quaint and quiet—everything you could ever hope for in a day trip. Walking downtown, you won't help but notice the architectural wonders and historic landmarks. Many former sea captain homes have been converted to charming inns, such as the Historic Captain Nickels Inn. For an overview of the town's seafaring history, don't miss the chance to explore the Penobscot Marine Museum.

While it's lovely in every season, Searsport is especially stunning in the fall, as its surrounding woods come alive in an astonishing blaze of color.

There are loads of natural wonders to experience this time of year. You can't miss a stroll through Moose Point State Park. The autumn blaze is nothing short of extraordinary. One of the most popular treks in the park is Big Spruce Trail, an easy, one-mile hike that showcases the park's exquisite natural beauty. Fall here is like a second spring—but with intense, vivid color.

So much exploring is bound to work up an appetite, and fortunately, there are plenty of excellent places to dine in Searsport. Hey Sailor! is a local favorite, boasting fresh, inventive crowd-pleasers like tacos, pizza, bar snacks, desserts, and drinks.

If you're looking for the ultimate dreamy autumn experience, consider a trip to Searsport. All the autumn splendors await!
