You don't have to go far within Maine to find the perfect place to live. In fact, Maine has one of the absolute lowest crime rates in the entire country. When it comes to violent crimes and property crimes, we come in well under the national average. To find out more, we worked with Neighborhood Scout to come up with this list of the 10 safest and most peaceful places to live in Maine. Remember that these statistics are updated annually and may change, so don't pack your bags based only on this list. But! You can rest easy knowing that you'll probably have a relatively quiet time if you choose to visit.

1. Monticello-Bridgewater Area, Aroostook County

This small town saw very little reported crime last year. It's worth making a trip to see Uranus and Neptune as part of the University of Maine's scaled Solar System model. The 2010 population was reported at approximately 1,400 people.

2. Northern Piscataquis, Piscataquis County

It's no surprise that this town is one of the safest. The town is comprised of just one neighborhood and has a population of 274 people. With an approximate population of 17,535, Piscataquis County is the least populous in Maine. Maybe there just aren't enough people to commit crimes?

3. Cumberland & Chebeague Island, Cumberland County

Cumberland & Chebeague Island is a somewhat small coastal area with a population of 7,739 people and just one neighborhood. It is the 45th largest community in Maine. But, don't hire movers just yet. This area's homes are ranked among the most expensive in the country!

4. Chapman-Castle Hill Area, Aroostook County

With a population of 2,769 people and just one neighborhood, the Chapman - Castle Hill Area is the 159th largest community in Maine. While the primary language spoken here is English, its proximity to Canada means you'll find some French as well.

5. Eustis, Stratton, Coplin Area, Franklin County

With its lovely woods and friendly people, this area would make a nice place for dinner. Specifically, stop in for a meal at The Coplin Dinner House. Thursday night is pub night featuring all-you-can-eat fish and chips.

6. Sidney, Kennebec County

The population of Sidney is approximately 4,208. The town was incorporated in 1792 and named for Sir Philip Sidney, an English author. Since 1937, Sidney has been home to the New England Music Camp.

7. Saint Agatha & Frenchville, Aroostook County

Home of Long Lake, St. Agatha is a popular travel destination. With a population of 1,787 people, the area is the 210th largest community in Maine.

8. Durham, Adroscoggin County

Durham is both beautiful and tiny. With a population of approximately 3,904, it is the 92nd largest community in the state. If you're in Durham make sure you take a look at the gorgeous Lisbon Falls. You won't forget it.

9. Fayette & Wayne, Kennebec County

These tiny towns are big on natural beauty if you look for it. The area is the 205th largest in the state and has an approximate population of just 2,312 people. Wayne is home to Camp Androscoggin in the summer.

10. Eagle Lake - Wallagrass Area, Aroostook County

And our last town is, no surprise, located in The County. As a popular tourism destination, these towns can get very quiet during the off-season. So, if you're looking for some peace and quiet this might just be the perfect place for you!
