This Island Might Be Maine’s Best Kept Secret And You’ll Want To Visit
Great Diamond Island offers a quieter alternative to Peaks Island with beautiful scenery and secluded beaches.
As the weather warms up, it's time to think about how to enjoy the great outdoors of Maine. While many people will head to places like Acadia National Park or The Kennebunks, we love hopping on a local ferry to one of of the many offshore islands that dot the state's craggy coastline. There are many popular ones from which to choose, but we recommend you head straight for this less-visited island sitting just a short ride from Portland.
Head slightly north from Peaks Island and you'll find another beautiful Casco Bay island: Great Diamond Island.
Despite being easily accessed by a 20-25 minute ferry ride from Portland, Great Diamond is often overshadowed by its better-known neighbor.
But, there's no denying that Great Diamond is just as worthy of a visit if you love Maine scenery and just a bit more quiet.
From the boat, the island looks less inhabited than Peaks.
But, rest assured that despite being lesser-known there's plenty to enjoy!
The island is only about 415 acres, making it a place you explore in just one day.
There are a number of walks that will take visitors through the mossy woods as well as secluded beaches where you're likely to have the place to yourself.
Be sure to find Sea Glass beach, named for the beautiful treasures you'll find washed up in the sand.
Be sure to find the beauty in the details as you explore.
You'll probably get hungry, so be sure to pack a lunch and some snacks as there's only a small general store or the restaurant located at the Inn at Diamond Cove.
As the name suggests, the Inn is located in the private section of Diamond Cove.
Only residents and those staying at the Inn can travel inside this gated community.
But, if you can afford it, a stay might be just what your soul needed!
Whether you stay overnight, or choose to take the short ferry ride back to Portland Great Diamond Island is the perfect alternative to Peaks during the more crowded summer months.
On weekends, ferries run from Portland between 6:30am and 5:45pm. The last ferry leaves Great Diamond Island at 7:55pm.
