This Friendly Town In Louisiana Is The Perfect Day Trip Destination
Covington, Louisiana, offers a blend of small-town charm and city amenities, making it an ideal day trip destination.
Generally speaking, most of Louisiana’s towns are pretty friendly-- it goes with the whole "southern hospitality" bit! While you can pick just about any town in Louisiana to spend a day exploring, there’s one friendly town in Louisiana that’s just begging for a day trip. Let’s check out what’s going on in Covington, the crown jewel of St. Tammany Parish.
Covington is one of those “little-big” towns that’s easy to fall in love with.
With a population of about 10,000 people, the town is the best of both worlds. You can find all the amenities of larger cities while still enjoying the quiet small-town life, especially downtown.
Start your day by walking around the town’s historic downtown district.
Here, you’ll find all sorts of local boutiques and businesses for you to pop in and out of. Take note of the unique ox-lots as you walk around. While today they’re generally parking lots and back areas for the local businesses, these historic little areas used to be where merchants would set up/deliver their products.
In between antique shops, art galleries, and clothing boutiques, local restaurants, bars, and cafes pepper in nicely.
Swing through any one of them and fuel up.
For a little nature fix, head down to Bogue Falaya Park.
Nestled along the Bogue Falaya River, this scenic park is the perfect spot for a picnic lunch. There’s also a large playground for the youngsters to release some energy.
If you time your visit just right, you’ll be able to check out the Covington Farmers Market.
It takes place every Wednesday and Saturday and is the best spot for picking up locally grown fruits and veggies as well as locally made products like breads, honey, candles, soaps, and more.
While you’re in the area, take a look around the Covington Trailhead.
It’s part of the Tammany Trace, which is a 30+ mile paved trail that winds through five towns in St. Tammany Parish. Even if you don’t have time to hike the entire trail, there are some scenic waterfront spots on the Covington portion of the trail worth seeking out. Oh, and that massive Ronald Reagan statue? It’s the largest one in the world, and has an interesting backstory!
If you loved Covington, be sure to put Madisonville on your small towns in Louisiana bucket list. It's positively dreamy and located just a short drive away from Covington!
