9 Unwritten Rules To Surviving A Summer In New Orleans

Tips for surviving the summer heat in New Orleans include staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and enjoying snoballs.

New Orleans summers can be pretty brutal. We’ve had some incredibly hot days recently, so we thought it would be a good idea to remind New Orleanians of the best ways to survive a summer in the Crescent City.

1. Hydrate

Seems like a no-brainer, but it’s very easy to get dehydrated when it’s this hot outside.

2. Sunscreen

Even just being outside for a little while can give you a nasty sunburn. Protect your skin!

3. Park in the shade

Nothing worse than coming back to a car that feels like it’s a million degrees and you can’t really even touch the steering wheel.

4. Don’t touch that belt buckle

If your car has been parked in the sun all day, that little piece of metal is going to feel like it’s on fire. We’ve all accidentally touched it, and it stings!

5. Invest in some black out curtains for your home

A/C bills in the summer can put a dent in your wallet. Try to keep your home as cool as possible so your A/C doesn’t have to work twice as hard.

6. Make sure you change your A/C filters

Because when your A/C breaks mid-summer, you’re in for a long night.

7. Snoballs are a great way to cool down

Beat the heat with one of these tasty treats! They’re incredibly refreshing and easy on the wallet.

8. Bug spray

Make sure to have it on hand if you’re going outdoors. Those pesky ‘skeeters will get you!

9. Have an umbrella handy

Random afternoon showers are a routine thing around here. It could be sunny one moment and then the sky will fall in five minutes later. Plus, you can use it to keep yourself shaded in the sun.
