We’ve got a lot of love for big city life, but small towns are where you’ll find the true heartbeat of Louisiana. These tiny towns may not be the biggest tourist attraction, but it’s certainly where you’ll find what it’s like to live in Louisiana. Small towns remind us of simpler times, where everyone was connected and everyone knows everyone. Here are some of our favorite reasons why Louisiana small-town pride runs deep:

1. Everyone knows your name

This is probably the most popular reason to love (or hate) small towns, but it’s true. When everyone knows everyone, your family basically triples in size.

2. You can say things like “I’ll have the usual.”

Sure, if you drive through a Starbucks enough, they’ll eventually know your order... but when you live in a small town, they’ll have it ready before you even walk in the door.

3. It’s cheaper

Those big cities come with big price tags. Your dollar goes much further in a small town.

4. Small businesses

Piggybacking on #3, not only does your dollar go further in a small town, but so often you’ll be supporting small businesses where your money is appreciated on a completely different level.

5. The traditions

Louisiana loves traditions, and many small towns in Louisiana have their own unique traditions that keep the small-town charm alive.

6. The people

The people quite literally make the small town what it is. And they care about each other like you would your immediate family. When somebody suffers a tragedy, the community is there to help them back on their feet. Whether that’s dropping food off, mowing their lawn, or patronizing their business, no one has your back more than members of a small town.

7. The Food

We know that there are incredible chefs peppered around Louisiana’s bigger cities, but they can’t hold a candle to the small-town grandmas who break out the Wagner Ware.

8. The sports

Fridays in small-town Louisiana are reserved for football. There’s something about small-town high school football games that just electrify the town. These folks are just as passionate about the high school football game as they are about the Super Bowl, and it’s amazing to watch.
