Discover the Louisiana Town That Looks Like a Hallmark Movie Set
With a quaint town square, friendly locals, and community spirit, Covington belongs in a Hallmark film. It's one of the most charming small towns in Louisiana.
Of all the charming small towns in Louisiana (and there are a lot, as you probably well know), few are as idyllic as Covington. Located less than an hour north of New Orleans, this quaint community is renowned for its walkable downtown area, vibrant arts scene, rich history, and beautiful scenery. With a low crime rate, friendly locals, and regular events that bring everyone together, Covington preserves a way of life that’s all but lost in the modern world. If Hallmark ever filmed a movie in Louisiana, it should be here.
Situated at the intersection of the Bogue Falaya and Tchefuncte rivers with sprawling live oaks lining the streets, Covington is a picture-perfect town that looks like it was pulled straight out of a Hallmark movie. The town was founded in 1813, and its 200-year heritage is reflected in historic buildings that have withstood the test of time.
Admire the unique architecture as you explore downtown Covington, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just as in Hallmark movies, the town square is extremely walkable, featuring boutique shops, art galleries, and restaurants.
Covington’s motto is “Slow Your Roll, Slow Your Pace,” which perfectly describes life in the charming river town. While its population of just under 12,000 is on the higher end of what most would consider to be a “small town,” the strong community ties, mom-and-pop shops, and year-round festivals make it feel much more like a cozy village than a city. Locally-owned businesses are the heart and soul of towns in Hallmark movies, and Covington is no exception. From old-fashioned diners and family-run bistros to antique and home decor shops, nothing here is cookie-cutter or impersonal. It's one of those towns where people gather at local cafes on Friday nights, and new faces are always welcome. You'll probably know the life stories of several residents before your visit is over!
Over 100 music festivals are held annually in Covington, highlighting the town's passion for art and culture. When you're sprawled out on the grass of one of the city's many parks as the tunes fill the air, life just feels good. Of course, Covington also has a weekly farmers' market every Saturday morning. It's another great place to meet people, immerse yourself in the culture, and try local cuisine.
A day trip to Covington is certainly doable, but if you're looking to stick around a bit longer, the Southern Hotel is the place to stay. This luxury boutique hotel first opened in 1907, and despite undergoing extensive renovations in 2014, its historic charm remains. Stroll through the tree-lined courtyard and enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant serving French-inspired cuisine. The hotel alone makes the perfect setting for a Hallmark romance!
Have you ever visited Covington? It definitely passes the Hallmark test.
