Escape to This Charming Mountain Town in Kentucky Before Fall Ends

Fall is my favorite time of year. I live for that first cold snap, when the air gets crisp and the colors begin to change. This is when I find myself returning to Kentucky’s mountain towns to immerse myself in autumnal adventures like hiking, drinking hot apple cider, and finding that perfect pumpkin to take home. Berea is a charming mountain town in Kentucky that’s worth a visit this fall, and we’ve mapped out a fall itinerary so you can spend a weekend in Berea before fall ends. 

Berea is a mid-sized city in Madison County with more than 15,000 residents. Home to Berea College, plenty of historic buildings, restaurants, and outdoor adventure opportunities, there’s always something to do in Berea. While this charming mountain town is beautiful year-round, it truly comes alive in the fall.

The Artists of Berea

Berea is known as the Folk Arts & Crafts Capital of Kentucky. Located in “old town” Berea, the Artisan Village is where you’ll find several artisan studios, handmade jewelry, art galleries, fabric stores, gift shops, and more. 

No visit to Berea is complete without a Berea Public Art Tour. This self-guided tour takes you to roughly 20 spots to admire various statues, exhibits, street art, stained glass installations, unique architecture, and more. Nature in Berea

Visiting Berea in the fall gives you an excellent opportunity to hike the Pinnacles, one of the best hikes in Kentucky. The best part of leaf peeping is getting outside and immersing yourself in those beautiful fall colors, and the Pinnacles certainly doesn’t disappoint. 

Two of my favorite hiking trails here are the Indian Fort Lookout (two miles) and the West Pinnacle Trail (three miles). There are several trails within the Berea College Forest, and you can mix and match them to fit your schedule. The views in the fall are nothing short of spectacular! Pack some snacks so you can hang out at the lookout for a while and take it all in.

Where to Stay in Berea

There are plenty of places to stay in Berea. One of my favorites is a vacation rental just on the outskirts of town. Turtle Crossing sits off the main road in a secluded area that’s perfect for viewing the fall colors. The two-bedroom, one-bathroom house has plenty of space and sits on a treeline that’s home to plenty of deer and turkey. The owners also provide farm-fresh eggs, which adds a lovely farm-like feel to your stay. 

The only detail left is when to expect Kentucky's fall foliage. Hopefully, it peaks at the right time, and we won't have to deal with any surprise storms threatening those lovely leaves.
