Monticello, Kentucky, is a charming small town known for its historic sites and local businesses, making it a perfect detour to the Kentucky Mountains.

This adorable little mountain town makes a perfect detour on your way to the Kentucky Mountains, and is sure to become one of your new favorite places in the state.

Monticello is a sweet little town located in the southern region of Kentucky. It's known as the "Houseboat Capital of the World," as the town boasts several houseboat manufacturers.

But there's so much more to Monticello than boats; this small locale of just over 6,000 residents packs quite a historic punch!

Pictured here is a log cabin in downtown Monticello, built in the early 19th century by local settler "Racoon" John Smith. The cabin was originally located in Horse Hollow on the Little South Fork River, and today sits right in town for visitors to admire.

Monticello is home to numerous historic buildings; the West-Metcalfe House is another notable site. It was the first brick house in this region of Kentucky, and it also served as Confederate headquarters and a battlefield hospital during the Battle of Mill Springs.

Nearby, the Brown-Lanier House dates back to 1830 and served as a home, headquarters, and hospital before and after the Battle of Mill Springs.

Speaking of which, this is Mill Springs Mill, a historic, beautifully preserved gristmill from the 1800s that's simply enchanting to visit.

History aside, Monticello is a delightful little place to explore. In the downtown area, The Quilt Shoppe is one-of-a-kind; this place celebrates the beautiful art and craft of quilting.

Country Farm and Home is a fun general store to peruse, too. Here you'll find everything from farm and feed supplies to homemade hats and wares!

While you're in town, keep an eye out for these massive Adirondack chairs, part of a city-wide project to support local businesses and bolster town spirit.

Pick up a coffee while you peruse Monticello's Main Street -- Happy Hoppers is a beloved family-owned spot in town!

And when your stomach starts talking, head to Black Stallion Steak House Restaurant, a classic steakhouse serving up delicious, stick-to-your-ribs kind of fare.
