Welcome to Abilene, Kansas, a town in the Eastern half of Kansas, between Salina and Junction City.

They've got a population of just under 7,000 and plenty of small town charm to go around. Abilene was named after a passage in the bible (Luke 3:1), and means "city of the plains." It was a popular place for cattlemen to drive their herds, as well as the end of the Chisholm Trail at the time, making it a town with plenty to offer.

Abilene got it's early start when the Kansas Pacific Railway pushed through town and brought people with it. Today, you can enjoy rides on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad.

After all, there's nothing that'll make you feel like you're in another century than riding an old train or steam locomotive as you relax and enjoy the view.

Staying the night in Abilene is as easy as picking a historic home you'd love to sleep in.

This one is Abilene's Victorian Inn, filled with pastel and decorative wallpaper and plenty of furniture to match. The breakfasts here are delicious, and the staff can point you anywhere you'd like to explore for the day.

Of course, while you're here you'll most likely work up an appetite.

However, don't forget to look around.

The Hitching Post is a fantastic restaurant that has plenty of local history without all the hype and traffic from tourists.

Abilene was also once home to Eisenhower himself, and the town has all but embraced this place as his former home.

You can see his house right on the street like it's always been, though it now operates as a museum instead of a residence.

Other areas to explore include Old Abilene Town, which puts on shows and events that bring you even further into history with reenactments.

People dress in period clothing, and play the parts of people who once lived in this historic Kansas town.

Eisenhower wasn't the only one with a famous home here, however. There are other mansions to enjoy as well, like the Lebold and Seelye buildings.

This one is Lebold Mansion, made of native Kansas limestone, and built in 1880.

Whether you come for the food, the atmosphere, or even the mansions, you'll find that Abilene is a wonderfully charming place to be.
