The Friendly Small Town In Kansas That’s Perfect For A Summer Day Trip
There's nothing like a summer getaway. Whether you're planning on staying a few nights or just want to escape for a great day trip in Kansas, the warm months are the perfect time to escape. We certainly love trips to our large cities: Wichita, Topeka, Lawrence, and Overland Park are all great and have plenty to do. However, don't miss out on all the great small towns in Kansas! All over the Sunflower State, you'll find charming small towns that have a surprising amount of attractions. That's certainly the case with the tiny town we're featuring today. Check out just how many things there are to do in Lucas, KS:
Lucas is a little city in quiet Russell County. The population of the entire city is only around 350 people, and agriculture is the biggest industry here.
However, there's certainly a reason that this place is known as the Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas!
The main attraction in Lucas is The Garden of Eden, an attraction unlike any other in the state (or even world).
This collection of political and religious-themed art was established in 1907 and it's the country's oldest folk art installation.
It's not just within The Garden of Eden that you'll find colorful artwork in Lucas, though: it's everywhere here!
Head down Highway 18 between Lucas and Beverly and you'll find the "Open Range Zoo," a collection of sculptures crafted by Jim Dickerson and his son Trent. The sculptures are hidden near billboards, in trees, and even atop rocks, and are all made of found materials.
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Lucas is home to the Grassroots Arts Center.
The Grassroots Art Center works to exhibit folk and outsider art within its gallery in Lucas.
If you enjoy spending time outdoors in the summertime, Lucas offers access to the stunning Wilson Lake, a perfect place for a day of fun in the sun.
You can also catch a movie at the historic Lucas Area Community Theater...
...or maybe grab a bite to eat at Brant's Market. This market has been open since 1922, making it one of the oldest meat markets in the country.

The area around Wilson Lake has some great trails: check out the cool Rock Town Trail that's right by the water!
