The Charming Small Town In Kansas That Was Named After A Waterfall
Tucked in the scenic Flint Hills, Cottonwood Falls is a small town in Kansas known for its historic courthouse, waterfalls, and quiet, scenic charm.
Waterfalls in Kansas aren’t exactly everywhere. We’re not as flat as people think, but we also don’t have the dramatic peaks that create huge cascades. Still, a few do exist—and one of them even helped inspire the name of one of the state’s most charming small towns. Cottonwood Falls, the largest city in Chase County, sits in a quiet, scenic pocket of the Flint Hills with just over 800 residents. It’s a classic Kansas small town and such a lovely place to spend a day.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the Chase County Courthouse. Built in 1873 from local limestone and finished with walnut details inside, it’s the oldest operating courthouse in Kansas. It sits right in the middle of town, just a short stroll from Cottonwood Falls’ small collection of streets, shops, eateries, and its tiny downtown.
Just a few miles west of town, you’ll find Chase State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area. This little preserve is home to Prather Creek Falls—also called Chase Lake Falls—a trio of small waterfalls that drop about 40 feet in total. They’re at their best after a good rain, but even on a normal day, it’s a peaceful spot for a quick walk along the easy 0.9‑mile trail by the spillway.
Nature lovers can also take a short drive to Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, about five miles northwest. Wide-open prairie views, quiet trails, and the rolling Flint Hills all come together here, offering a beautiful contrast to the cozy, small-town feel of Cottonwood Falls.
Another local highlight sits at the northern edge of town: the historic Cottonwood River Bridge, built in 1914 and now open only to pedestrians. It’s a nice place for a relaxed walk, and there’s a small picnic area nearby. If you look out over the river—especially after wet weather—you can often spot a few small cascades formed by the steady flow.

Altogether, Cottonwood Falls is the kind of place you visit when you want to slow down a little. It’s quiet, welcoming, and still feels a bit timeless in the best way.
