Swim at This Iconic Waterfall Swimming Hole in Kansas for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun

Warmer weather is finally here, y’all! Before we know it, the temperature will rise into the 90s. Soon, the kids will be out of school, and you’ll be left scrambling for fun activities for them to do. Well, there's no need to stress. I’ve got an exciting day trip in Kansas that the entire family will enjoy. Pack a lunch and let’s make a big splash at Chase Lake Falls in Cottonwood Falls. There’s no better way to spend warmer days than wading in this waterfall swimming hole in Kansas.  

The 40-foot, multi-tier waterfall is not the largest in the country, but for the Sunflower State, it’s pretty spectacular. The iconic fall is located at Chase State Fishing Lake and Wildlife Area, an hour north of Wichita, tucked inside the gorgeous Flint Hills. The wildlife preserve is a popular destination for hunting, fishing, boating, and free camping. 

A short hike across Chase Lake Dam leads to the stunning hidden gem. Nature lovers should take some time to appreciate the views of the native grass prairie and the pretty little wildflowers on the trail.

Chase Lake Falls is nestled inside the serene woodlands, and the cascade is a great backdrop for photos. Since it’s a popular spot during the warmer seasons, expect to see other folks here. There is lots of room for everyone to splash and play, but if you want to avoid the crowds, go early or plan your trip on a weekday. The best time to visit is after a good rain, when the water from the lake is gushing and feeding the falls. I’d suggest planning your trip around late spring or early summer when the water level is at its highest. The pool below the falls will be the perfect spot to get your feet wet or for the kids to wade all day. 

If you plan on splashing around all afternoon, pack a cooler with your favorite snacks and water. Bring a blanket and find a shady spot to sit and admire the pretty waterfall. Even if you don’t get your feet wet, listening to the sound of the water is so relaxing and peaceful. I can’t think of a better place to make new memories with the little ones.

Want to turn this day trip into a weekend-long adventure? Grab your camping gear and pick a spot along the shores of the scenic lake. Remember your fishing rod, too. The 100-acre lake is stocked with channel catfish, black and white bass, saugeye, and crappies. 

When you’re not at the lake, drive five minutes to explore the charming town of Cottonwood Falls. You’ll want to see the walkable downtown with its historical buildings, museums, antique shops, and specialty boutiques.
