Stop By These 9 Places The Next Time You Drive Across Kansas

If you drive across Kansas, you are usually traveling from town to town with a specific destination, but what do you do when you just need to cross the whole state from one side of the other? You turn it into a road trip, of course! If you take the Kansas City to Colorado (or the other way around) trip enough to shake it up sometimes, check out these 9 stops you can make along the way.

1. Mt. Sunflower

Mount Sunflower isn't really a mountain at all, but it is a fun stop on the way to or out of Colorado. It's the highest point in Kansas, and great for pretending Kansas is a nowhere place where you can see nothing for miles. We say, let them think there's nothing here!

2. Sternberg Museum of Natural History

In Hays, you'll find the Sternberg Museum, great for anyone who wants to learn about the giant inland sea that once covered Kansas, as well as the cool fossils that have been unearthed here.

3. St. Fidelis Basilica

Known as the Cathedral of the Plains, St. Fidelis is a gorgeous church that towers over all of us. Inside are beautiful glass windows, high white ceilings, and the feeling that you're stepping in part of Kansas history.

4. Midland Railroad Hotel

The beautiful Midland hotel is not only a great spot to take a rest stop or grab a bite to eat, but also a place to see ghosts, if you're into the paranormal.

5. S. P. Dinsmoor's Garden of Eden

This beautiful concrete construction is the work of an artist who wanted to create these biblical and political characters in a solid form, displaying them interacting with each other and making money off of home tours to support his lifestyle.

6. Bobo's Drive In

Then, in Topeka, you should stop by for one of the state's best burgers and onion rings. They're even better with bacon, if you're the type to try it!

7. Potwin Drug Store

Afterwards, you can stop by Potwin Drug and get an old-timey experience ordering a soda at the counter.

8. Moon Marble

Speaking of old fashioned, this marble company in Bonner Springs holds demonstrations of how they make their own marbles by hands, and even if you miss the demo, you can still pick up a set of marbles or vintage toys while you're here.

9. Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que

Some of the world's best barbecue meats and sauce come together at Joe's, and you can't travel without tasting some if you've never had the chance before.
