The Small Town in Iowa That Comes Alive During the Winter Season

Bellevue, Iowa, is a charming winter destination with scenic views, outdoor activities, and excellent food and drink options.

A long winter lies ahead, and for some people that means wanting to curl up at home with a hot cup of cocoa. For others, like me, winter in Iowa is the perfect time to travel, especially to the small towns that come alive when it gets cold and begins to snow. One of those towns is Bellevue, Iowa, a small city of a little over 2,000 people with gorgeous river views and a rich cultural and culinary scene.

When you explore Bellevue, you will find beautiful natural sites and isolated byways that look stunningly peaceful in the winter. You might also want to indulge in some of the best food and drink in the Hawkeye State to warm up after a day of exploring. After a day in Bellevue during the coldest season of the year, it won't be hard to see why people call it one of the best winter getaways in Iowa.

Ready for adventure? Bundle up, and make your way to Bellevue State Park, a haven in the middle of the city. However, it's especially peaceful during the winter. Two of the best things to do in Bellevue, Iowa, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular wintertime activities at Bellevue State Park. Or, bundle up for a hike on the three miles of trails. The easy terrain, especially on a bitterly cold day, promises a fun adventure for visitors of all ages.

However, if you're looking for an adventure that will take you a bit further and offers sensational views of the wintry landscape, Bellevue, Iowa, is known for its scenic byways, including the Grant Wood Scenic Byway, a popular road for driving and bicycling. The pretty path meanders 75 miles from Stone City to the Mississippi River and boasts several scenic vistas.

One of my favorite things about winter in Iowa is being able to take photos of the snow-capped landscapes. Along the way, you'll pass fields and farmhouses that look like they were taken directly from a painting. Don't forget to fill up your gas tank, if you're driving, and bring your camera before setting off on a winter ride through Iowa.

Getting out in the open air in Iowa during the winter is great, and it makes finding a relaxing place to spend the night even better. Welcome to River Ridge Brewing, Bellevue's crown jewel, where you'll always find something new on tap. Bring a hearty appetite with you, and pair a tasty bite with a cold beer. The brewery in Bellevue serves such favorites as flatbreads, large pretzels, paninis, wings, and nachos. If you're not too hungry, opt for one of the bites like peanuts or popcorn, which pair perfectly with a cold drink.

Have you explored Bellevue, Iowa, yet? If not, add it to your winter bucket list. But don't limit your visit to the wintertime. Bellevue is also one of the best small towns in Iowa to visit during the fall.
