Taking the Great River Road in Iowa along the eastern border is a rite of passage for most Hawkeye State travelers. Not only does it give you amazing views of the Mississippi River, but it also takes you to some of the state's most picturesque towns. Here are six towns along the way you won't want to miss - and some amazing things to do while you're there.
The Great River Road is full of some amazing stops along the way - making for an unforgettable road trip.
1. Lansing
Near Iowa's northern border, this small town is known for being a haven for camping and waterside recreation.
Make sure to stop for some fuel at the Red Barn Campground and Restaurant, and fill up on some top-notch country cooking.
2. McGregor
This town has a downtown that will feel like you stepped right back in time - but most people here are headed to the outskirts.
McGregor is the home of Pikes Peak State Park, which features the most beautiful views in all of Iowa.
3. Guttenberg
This riverside town is known for its rich European heritage and its many old-fashioned riverboats sailing by.
It also has one of the state's best wineries - PromiseLand Winery, where you can stop in for a tasting.
4. Bellevue
This quiet little town is a great place to recharge your batteries and take in some crisp, clean waterside air.
The Bellevue Fish Stacks Sculptures are this town's quirkiest spot - a unique tribute to the region's fishing history.
5. Le Claire
A popular recreation and dining spot in southeast Iowa, Le Claire is beautiful no matter the time of year.
It's also home to one of only two Bierstube restaurants - and you won't want to miss this raucous German restaurant and beer garden.
6. Wapello
Near the southern end of Iowa's Great River Road, Wapello is a charming town that specializes in one area.
Wapello is known as one of the state's great wine towns, and you'll definitely want to stop by the Odessa Vineyards and Winery for a tour.
